Vusat Iqbal Khan is an accomplished singer from the ‘Dilli Gharana’ which is one of the oldest sangeet gharanas in the country. She is the daughter of Ustad Iqbal Ahmed Khan, the Khalifa of the Dilli Gharana of Indian classical music, and the first woman from this legendary family of musicians to come forward on stage.
Reminiscing about her childhood memories, Vusat says she was fortunate enough to be raised in a family of musicians, where she always had music in the air. She was a darling to her parents. She completed her schooling at Presentation Convent Senior Secondary School.
Vusat is a Postgraduate in Advertising and Marketing and a History graduate from IP College, Delhi University. She worked as a Media Consultant with the Ministry of Communications & Information Technology.
After working for years, in 2015, she started her journey as an artist. People see Vusat as the pioneer of the musical ‘Dastangoi’, a new style of storytelling that she has developed by including the rich diversity of the repertoire of the Dilli Gharana in her productions while continuing to maintain the purity of traditional Dastangoi in her storytelling style. Her style of Dastangoi musicals weaves ghazals, thumri and exquisite ‘bandishes’ composed by the Gharana, to narrate a story in refined (nafees) Urdu.
In 2020, when she lost her father, she went into a depression for two years. It was the hardest time for her, but her husband and son remained her strong supporters throughout the phase. During this phase, she met the ‘Hazrat’ of Ajmer Sharif, who encouraged her to follow in her father’s footsteps. To pay tribute to her father, she started singing professionally, and she is the first woman singer from her legendary musician family to come forward on stage.
Speaking about her achievements, Vusat says she feels accomplished being an Associate Director of the Ajmer Global Sufi Foundation which is an NGO. Through her NGO she has been trying to spread love around the world.
When asked about her role models, Vusat says she always looked up to her father. She wanted to follow in his footsteps. She seeks inspiration from each and every person who comes into her life.
Vusat’s life revolves around this quote, “What you seek is seeking you.” She firmly believes that whatever someone desires will be granted by God. She holds a strong conviction that God is all-knowing and benevolent, capable of fulfilling every individual's heartfelt wishes. This unwavering faith in divine providence drives her optimism and perseverance in pursuing her dreams.
