Vinay J. Maurya is a businessman from Mumbai. He works in the field of interior design.
Vinay was born and brought up in a small village in the Basti district of Uttar Pradesh. He did all his schooling from Basti itself. After his school education, he joined a B.Sc. course in Ayodhya, but left the college in the second year.
All his relatives, including his father, brother, and uncle, have been active in the field of interior design. Due to his interest in this field, he too thought of making a career in it. He then received a Diploma in Interior Design.
Sharing his childhood memories, Vinay says he had a normal childhood in his village. He still remembers that while he came to Mumbai in 2007, electricity reached his village in 2009. He has seven siblings, and his parents always supported their education. In his village, because there was no electricity, he completed all his education under an oil lamp. Though he was average in his studies, he always wanted to do something different in life. So, when he felt that a B.Sc. would not be the right thing for him to do, he went to Mumbai to try his luck there.
Describing his journey, Vinay says that when he first came to Mumbai, and started living in a 10×10 feet living space, he felt that he would not be able to live there. But he did not lose courage and tried to find his destination through struggle. On the advice of his uncle, he started searching for work in the field of interior design. He started working without any salary at a modular kitchen firm to learn the intricacies of the field. Along with this, he received his diploma in interior design. Then he joined an interior design firm, which gave him good exposure to handling large projects. After working for years with the company, he established his own business.
Speaking about his mistakes, Vinay says he thinks one of his major mistakes was not paying attention to his studies during his graduation. To make up for that mistake, he still works 12–16 hours a day.
When asked about his role models, Vinay says he considers his father as his role model. He says that during his childhood, his mother used to be strict about expenses, but his father never stopped fulfilling their needs or demands. But when he moved to Mumbai and saw the living conditions of his father, he felt terrible about wasting his father’s money on his graduation. He also looks up to his friend Subhash, who is a furniture contractor. Despite being uneducated, the way he has progressed in his field is an inspiration. He also seeks inspiration from Swami Vivekananda and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Vinay says he dreams of visiting all the parts of the country by road, but he has such a busy schedule that he doesn’t get time for himself.
When asked about his accomplishments, Vinay says coming to Mumbai, leaving his village, and opting for the interior field is like one of his biggest accomplishments. For him, every small possession is an accomplishment, be it a house or a car.
Vinay warns the young people entering this area that there is fierce competition nowadays in the disciplines of architecture and interior design. Before establishing an interior design and architectural firm, one needs to obtain experience. Additionally, he advises young people from rural areas to steer away from the glamorous lifestyle of big cities because there are plenty of online alternatives that can help them find rewarding careers while still living in their hometowns.
