A  musician and songwriter, Vasudha Sharma had never thought that she would end up doing ‘music’ in life. From Krishna Bhajans to Alanis Morrissette’s compositions, Vasudha is an admirer of every genre of music.

Vasudha Sharma is a songwriter, singer, and music producer. She has been in the music industry for the past eighteen years.

Vasudha was born in Bhiwani, Haryana, and did her schooling till 10th there itself. After that, she went to Delhi and did the rest of her schooling from St. Thomas’s School in Humanities. Then she enrolled in Hindu College in Sociology Honors. Vasudha got a scholarship from Berkley’s College of Music, Boston, and studied music there.

Vasudha was also a part of a pop band named ‘Aasma’ in 2003.

Vasudha says that she used to participate in all the co-curricular activities in her school days. However, she had never thought that music would become her career itself.

Vasudha says that during her summer vacations she used to visit her aunt Chitra Rao in Mathura. Chitra used to train her in Krishna Bhajans and Krishna Rasiyas. Vasudha says that this was her initial training in music and Bollywood or western music came quite later in her life.

Vasudha shares that it was in Hindu College that she got exposure in the field of music. One of her then seniors, and now a friend, introduced her to the works of Alanis Morrissette, a Canadian musician and songwriter. Vasudha got so inspired by her that she learned her album ‘Jagged Little Pill’ by heart. She started taking part in both Indian and western music competitions and would win them.

It was around this time that she went for an audition for a show called ‘Popstars’ and got selected and her life completely changed. She got to work with artists like Salim-Sulema and Vishal Bhardwaj. Their debut songs ‘Chandu ke Chacha’ and ‘Tumse Pyar’ became nationwide hits.

Talking about her struggles, Vasudha says that the decision to end her association with ‘Aasma’ and find her next destination in life was a big change for her. Also, deciding to go to Mumbai at just eighteen years of age was also a milestone decision in her life which was very tough to make.

Talking about her role models, Vasudha says that her mentor from the initial days, her aunt Chitra Rao is someone she would be always grateful to. She also considers all the musicians and artists she has learned from, whether in person or through digital means, her inspiration.

When asked about her achievements, Vasudha says that being a part of a pop band was definitely one. Also, going to learn music in Boston is also what she considers an achievement. Besides all these,  her first album, Attuned Spirits, brought together thirty musicians and she has been a part of Bollywood and Marathi films and some documentaries as well, which are also her achievements.

Vasudha feels that the youth today is highly focused and committed to their work. There are many fields available for them now and the social media age has also made discoverability quite easy for new artists is what she believes.

Vasudha advises the youth that they can be masterpieces and work-in-progress in their field at the same time as the learning process never stops.

Vasudha shares that her success mantra in life is to work hard and be consistent.

When asked about her favorite quotes, she shares that two quotes really inspire her and those are,

“The difference between who you are and who you want to be is what you do.”, and

“Your value does not decrease by someone’s inability to see your work.”
