Uma Ramakrishnan is a Carnatic vocalist at Amrithavarshini. She is also teaching music to students from different countries.
Recalling her childhood, Uma says she was born and brought up in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Her family was from a musical background, which helped develop her interest in music. She started learning music at the age of seven. Later, she started performing in competitions and on stages. She used to participate in Karnataka Classicals.
Sharing her journey, Uma says she learned and performed singing under the guidance of her guru, Jayalakshmi Srinivasan. After college, she started singing as a side profession. Later on, she decided to choose music as her career. Then, she also started her own institute to teach Carnatic music and provide students with a platform to sing and learn.
Remembering her mistakes, Uma says she made a bunch of mistakes, but her gurus led her in the correct direction. She took things lightly, which was also a mistake. However, her gurus taught her, and she improved herself.
Uma believes that you should always have faith in your gurus at all times. She thinks they will guide you in the appropriate direction. Furthermore, she believes that a teacher plays a major role in shaping the career and interests of an individual.
When asked about her role models, Uma says her grandfather has always been a great inspiration for her.
Uma’s life mantra is "Don’t get carried away by awards and success; try to improve yourself every day."
Advising the newcomers, Uma says hard work and dedication are required to follow the passion of singing. Furthermore, she says there always will be competitions and challenges, but artists need to be confident and learn every day to become better.
In her free time, Uma likes to cook, and she also runs marathons.
