Dr Tarun Mathur is an Interventional Neurologist. He has been at the GBH American Hospital for the last four years. He is a General Neurology and Stroke Intervention specialist. He describes that Neurology is a broad field. It covers the brain, spine, nerves, muscles and movement and cognitive disorders. He informs that Intervention is a subspecialty of Neurology which deals in acute emergencies like brain strokes.
Talking about his childhood and early years, Tarun shares that he was a bookworm and was always into studies. He did MBBS from RNT Medical College, Udaipur and then went on to do MD and DM in Neurology from SMS Medical College, Jaipur. Thereafter he did a fellowship in Interventional Neurology from Zurich, Switzerland and worked for four years in Mumbai before coming to Udaipur.
Tarun says he was always fascinated by how neurologists clinically examined patients and had decided to become one in his second year of MBBS only. His mother wanted him to become a doctor and he had started striving for the same when he was in his school only.
When asked about struggles, Tarun says he didn't face any big challenges as he always had great family support. He is grateful to his wife and acknowledges her full support in pursuing his studies.
Talking about Corona, Tarun says that the last year has been tough for the medical fraternity. They took risk of getting infected when they operated upon patients who needed interventions but who were Covid affected too. He shares that initially, there were no proper RT-PCR tests and there also was a shortage of PPE kits but they took the risk and helped their patients.
Tarun highlights that earlier it was believed that strokes only hit the elderly but in the last decade they have found that even the young people are affected by strokes.
Tarun’s advice for beginners is to always be honest with your patients and also with themselves.
Tarun says that his teachers and professors have been his role models in life. He still follows one of his professors from SMS Medical College.
Even if he gets a chance to go back in time, Tarun would not want to change anything as he is happy with how his life has shaped out.
In his free time, Tarun likes to watch movies.
His message for everyone is to keep yourself motivated and never think that you have accomplished everything in life. He advises everyone to indulge in 45 minutes of physical activity daily to avoid brain strokes.
