A Politician, Social Worker, and Family Counselor, Sushma Kumawat has been working relentlessly for the welfare of people for the past many years.

Sushma was born and raised in Gujarat and she received her entire formal education there itself. She did a Bachelor in Textile Designing and a Master of Social Work.

In 1984, after her wedding, Sushma came to Udaipur. Sushma shares that though she was active in student politics in her college days, her political career began in a real sense after coming to Udaipur. She says that she learned to speak in Hindi after coming to Udaipur by engaging in social service and other political activities.

In 1991, Sushma joined a central government project named, “Pariwar Paramarsh Kendra”. And there she worked as a Family Counselor. And later she also fought for the post of a municipal councilor of Municipal Corporation, Udaipur thrice.

Sushma thinks that in today’s time things have changed considerably as opposed to earlier when women were not considered competent enough to work in politics and the social sector.

Talking about challenges she faced in life, Sushma says that working as a woman politician and social worker was not at all easy for her. She often had to face criticism from her community and often there would be family feuds owing to her profession. However, she acknowledges that her husband always supported her in all her endeavors in politics and the social sector

Sushma considers Mridula Sinha - Former Governor of Goa, and Jaywantiben Mehta- Former Union Minister, her role models and sources of inspiration.

Talking about Covid, Sushma shares that during the pandemic, with the help of good Samaritans, she distributed food packets to the needy. Besides, she says that owing to the pandemic, there was a rise in cases of domestic violence and family disputes and as a family counselor, she tried her best to solve some of them.

Sushma thinks that today’s youth lack patience and want everything instantly. She feels that parents should teach their children some values and spend some quality time with them besides just fulfilling their materialistic needs.

In her spare time, Sushma likes to watch movies and web series on Netflix. Besides, she also likes to read books and explore places. She is an ardent follower of Osho and reads his books regularly.

If she could go back in time, Sushma would want to be an athlete like P.T. Usha, as she had come first in a 400-meters race in the whole of Gujarat and had even qualified for the nationals in Delhi.

Sushma thinks that we all are born for a purpose in this world. Therefore her message to people is to have a goal in life and to work relentlessly until its attainment.
