Sushein Goklaney is a DJ and entrepreneur. He is also the founder of the Skratch DJ Academy.
Sushein recounts his initiation into DJing at the age of 16, shortly after completing his 12th grade. Influenced by his father, a ghazal singer, he immersed himself in classical music.
His passion led him to amass a collection of cassettes, spending countless hours listening to music. He used to wear headphones and pretend to be a DJ. He was determined to establish a career in the music industry as a performer. Despite facing criticism from relatives for not having a backup plan, he ignored their opinions and wholeheartedly dedicated himself to his chosen career.
During the early stages of his career, he started as a DJ trainer. While working as a DJ trainer, he realised that the education in music production was very backward, with no research or advancement. So he established his own academy, prioritising conceptual clarity for his students. Notably, at the tender age of twenty, he seized the opportunity to serve as an official DJ in the Indian Premier League (IPL), but many times he was underestimated due to his young age.
Reflecting on the dichotomy between education and experience, he asserts that while education forms the foundational structure of knowledge, practical wisdom is garnered exclusively through experience. He believes that what is taught in the books and what actually happens in real life are quite different. So, in his opinion, experience matters the most.
Despite his ardent passion for his profession and extensive touring commitments, whenever he gets some time, he spends it with his family and kids. He likes to chill out with his friends and watch movies. Binge-watching series is kind of a mental detox for him.
Speaking of his challenges, he shares that there was a time when he was suffering from various problems in his personal as well as professional life; he was about to give up, but he somehow managed to survive. And soon, he got the opportunity to perform in the IPL as their official DJ. There were setbacks at different stages of his life, but he fought every challenge and moved on. Even during the lockdown, he made his academy classes go online and honed his skills.
If given a chance to go back in time in a time machine, he expresses a desire to revisit the commencement of his career for improved planning. Nevertheless, he maintains a philosophical stance, believing that the events of the past were predestined, constituting invaluable lessons.
When asked about his role models, he refrains from idolising individuals but draws inspiration from entrepreneurial acquaintances and artists. He admires A.R. Rehman. However, he feels that every person has their own journey, and he too has a different path to follow and does whatever he feels is right for himself and his career.
To all the youngsters, he advises them not to copy what others are doing and to do what they really want to do in their lives. He encourages them to make their own decisions. Do not stick to one profession and have some backup options because, today, we cannot depend on just one thing; we need to think diversely in order to succeed in life. Be focused on whatever you are doing.
Sushein’s motivational quote is "At least think of the stars if you want to reach the moon." He encourages everyone to keep working hard for their goals.
