Sunny Bedi is a national chess player and a chess instructor.
Recalling his early days, Sunny shares that he used to play chess with his father and often ended up losing. Thus, he was determined to get better at the game. His uncle was a national chess player who inspired him to be a chess player in the future. Though Sunny also used to play football at school, he believed he could play chess to his full potential. So, he developed a passion for the game and thinks that chess improves one’s competitiveness, rational thinking, and decision-making ability.
Talking about his journey as a chess player, Sunny shares that one of the most interesting games he played was against a grandmaster, and the result ended up in a draw. He also played against a renowned international master and lost the game. Sunny believes that in chess, one can learn a lot from losing too.
Advising all chess players, Sunny suggests they analyze the records of interesting matches in order to learn and improve their own game. He adds that it is not necessary to play fast, but it is important to remain calm even in a winning situation.
Sunny says that even if you lose, you learn from the game and do not make the same mistakes again and again. He advises all players to think ahead of their opponents. Sunny believes that the game of chess also requires one to be physically and mentally fit.
Last but not least, Sunny enlightens us that theoretical knowledge is not enough when it comes to playing chess. He emphasizes that players should practice on a daily basis and have a dedicated timetable to stay ahead in the game.
Sharing his pandemic experience, Sunny says that COVID did not affect chess in any manner since matches were held online. He utilized his free time to improve his game and also dedicated a share of his time to yoga and meditation.
When asked about his role models, Sunny says he draws inspiration from his uncle, Shri Ram Sharma, who is his role model in the game of chess. Bobby Fischer, the American chess player, is also his role model. Sunny finds inspiration in the quote, "Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up."
Sunny is fond of traveling. He feels lucky, as due to his chess tournaments, he got the opportunity to visit several destinations in India.
