Sunita Verma is the principal of Natraj Music and Dance Academy. She says her academy functions under the banner of Sangeet Ashram, a 35-year-old academy. She provides training and degree programmes at her academy in Kathak, Folk Dances, and other dance styles, as well as classical music, Bhatkhande sangeet shastra, and instrumental music.
Sunita was born in Sardarshahar but raised in Panchkula. She did all her schooling at Sardarshahar up to tenth grade. However, she was married and went to Hyderabad after her tenth grade.
Sunita remembers her childhood as being difficult since she had trouble speaking in her early years and her parents had a hard time getting her to talk. She says that she had been passionate about dance since she was a young child, but no one paid attention to her. Her teachers didn't encourage her to compete in dance competitions, despite her desire. She used to secretly watch students dancing at her school. When her dance teacher discovered this, he was so taken with her enthusiasm that he granted her permission to learn to dance. She won various competitions for her school.
When asked about the challenges she met, Sunita replies that they varied from learning a dance to performing it to founding her academy. She says that when she was in school, learning dance was a little challenging because no one supported her, but she was still able to succeed. When she got married at an early age, it was extremely difficult for her to continue with dance in a conservative family. But, because of her achievements in dance, her family began to accept her passion. She studied dance professionally, gained a degree from the sangeet ashram, and was inspired to start her own academy there. She believes that so far, her journey has been memorable.
Describing her pandemic experience, Sunita says that the lockdown completely closed her academy. She says that she has never given up and has tried her absolute hardest to get back up on her feet and continue on her path.
Sunita says she draws inspiration from other successful people and her friends. She says that having a Sangeet Ashram Guru and friends who supported and encouraged her at each stage of her life made her feel blessed. She observed the administrators of the schools where she worked and picked up business practices from them.
If Sunita is given access to a Time Machine, she will return to her school and finish her studies with greater devotion. She feels that she would have achieved greater success than she does now if she had been able to finish her studies.
Sunita enjoys spending her free time eating, chatting with friends, and getting away from her hectic daily schedule.
Sunita advises the aspiring dance professionals to appreciate their mentors and never let their egos take control to the point that they no longer value their own Guru.
