A dancer, Sumit experienced many lows in life but crawled back up with his dedication and excellence in his art. Today, he not only teaches young aspirants of his field, but is also an international performer.

Sumit works as a dancer, choreographer, video editor, and music editor.

Talking about his journey in the field of dance, Sumit says that it has been a very tough journey. In his early days, he had no inclination towards becoming a dancer and had an interest in the technical field related to computers. However, his sister, who was a classical dancer herself, suggested he go into this field after seeing his expressions and moves.

Following her advice, Sumit joined an institute and started learning classical dance. Slowly, he started gaining a good name in this field. However, he started getting negative vibes from people around him who were getting jealous of his skills, says Sumit. People started demotivating him, and there came a time when he had zero confidence and decided to leave that place. Sumit says that this happened around 2005.

After trying for three to four months to find a way ahead, Sumit decided to do a course in computers and hone his skills in the editing field. Around this time, he came to know about Bhoomika Creative Dance Academy and their requirement for contemporary dancers. Sumit joined the academy, which had been started by Bharat Sharma, an ex-professor of dance at Hyderabad University.  There, he was motivated and trained by Bharat, and soon he was working as his assistant and performing in shows internationally. Sumit left the group in 2013 and started working on his own. However, he says that he will always be indebted to Bharat for helping him get his confidence in the field back.

In 2015, he accompanied a group of six to Mauritius as a dancer, choreographer, and editor and also performed in Africa. In 2019, he got a chance to represent India in the India-Nepal Festival under FY-India, spearheaded by the ICCR. He was appreciated by one and all for his group’s performance of a Buddhist ballet. Sumit says that he was also invited by the same institute where once he was demotivated a lot and hence felt that his life had come full circle.

Talking about the COVID-19 pandemic, Sumit says that the field of art saw a downfall as performances and shows stopped. However, things are getting better now and are back on track, according to him.

When asked about his life mantra, Sumit says that his mantra is not to harm anyone in life.

Advising the youth, Sumit says that artists who want to come into this field should try to start their training with classical dance itself, as it creates a strong base.

In his free time, Sumit likes reading, cycling, and pursuing his passion of editing. He also resorts to mediation whenever he is free.
