Respect everyone and be happy.
Sumeeta Sharma is a Kathak dancer and choreographer.
Recalling her childhood, Sumeeta says that she belonged to a reputed family. Her father was a child specialist who always supported her decisions. She was a brilliant student at her school. She chose dance as her career because it gave her a platform to express her emotions. She liked going on picnics as a child and enjoyed being social.
Sharing her dance journey, Sumeeta says that dance had always fascinated her since her childhood. Her guru recognised her talent and advised her father to make her join dance classes. So she joined dance classes and started learning dance from her guru. She was also an active child at her school and used to participate in all the activities. She says that she had learned a lot from her school music teacher, who always encouraged her to participate in different competitions. She used to participate in various programs, from which she got the chance to learn many dance forms. She learned Chhau from her uncle and Kathak and Odissi from her guru. Thereafter, she took a degree in dance from Ghandharva Mahavidyalaya in Pune.
Sumeeta recalls her family's ties to many well-known personalities of the time. So, seeing her talent, her maternal grandfather took her to Delhi after consulting her family, where she met her guru from Kathak Kendra and started learning from him.
Sumeeta says that due to her parents' encouragement, she has learned to be independent in her personal as well as her professional life. As she was studying in an Arya Samaj school, there was so much emphasis on the history of India that it helped her feel those emotions in her performances during school, such as playing the roles of Rani Lakshmi Bai and Meera Bai.
Talking about her mistakes, Sumeeta says she feels that mistakes make us learn something; she too has learned from her mistakes. She remembers that once she was scolded by her director, but she was not able to defend herself as she was not fluent in English. So, from that incident she realized she should pay attention to her language so she could defend herself next time.
In her spare time, Sumeeta enjoys cooking and creating new recipes. Her cooking is also appreciated by her friends and family. She likes to listen to music. She likes to teach students in her offline and online classes and is doing choreography for her students.
Sumeeta advises everyone to enjoy life and think positively. To all the budding Kathak artists, she advises them to learn from a guru and study books on Kathak to gain more knowledge. Connect with senior artists and try to learn from their performances.
