Sukhmani Kohli is a Clown by profession and teaches clowning and theater to people.
Sukhmani shares that both her parents were into the theater and owing to that she got exposure to drama, theater, and art from an early age. Her parents always gave her the freedom to pursue what she wanted. She thinks that she inherited art as a legacy from her parents.
After completing her schooling, Sukhmani enrolled in a BA course but soon dropped out of it as she realized that she could learn much more by herself than what the course had to offer her.
After dropping out of college, Sukhmani met and worked with different people from different walks of life. She learned about organic farming, zero waste, ‘kabaad se jugaad’, community engagement etc. She worked with different artists and realized that she wanted to make her career in the field of art as a facilitator.
Once, she started a community cafe in Chandigarh where people could meet other social misfits and communicate with them. She ran this cafe for four years.
Talking about her struggles Sukhmani says that there were definitely some challenges that she had to face to pursue clowning. Sometimes, she could not access her clown, she says. Besides, losing her father to Corona was the toughest time of her life.
Sukhmani feels that we all have a clown inside us. But we just tend to mask it with the identity that we have. She says, being a clown is about being in the present and being your true self.
Sukhmani thinks that life is about facing every challenge as it comes by jumping right in to beat it. She says that clowning has taught her to face every situation in life as it comes.
According to her, leadership is about doing things in synergy. She says that alone one can’t do everything. Therefore, one should never fear asking the help of others in a team to get the tasks done.
In her spare time, Sukhmani likes to weave wool and draw. Besides, she also likes to travel places.
