Sudipto grew up watching Cinema from all over the world, so he was always fascinated about it and even after stumbling a lot, he made his career in filmmaking. Besides being an Engineer, he is also a Film Teacher and a Filmmaker.

Sudipto Acharyya is a Film Teacher as well as a Filmmaker. For the last three years he has been teaching in the Direction Department of Whistling Woods International University, Mumbai. He  teaches Film Direction, the History of Cinema and Screenplay Writing.

Sudipto hails from Rourkela, Odisha. He lived there in a small industrial township with people of all castes celebrating each other’s festivals. He tasted the flavor of Indian modernity in his childhood itself and was enriched with social values. There was also a Film Club, where film fests used to be organized annually and kids' movies from all over the world were shown every weekend so he was extremely inspired and fascinated towards the culture of cinema from a very young age.

Despite having passion for cinema and filmmaking, Sudipto ventured into Engineering to keep up with his parents. But he did not feel like studying as he knew that cinema was his call and he ended up pursuing his career in Theater and performing arts. Gradually he learned many more arts and also finished his Engineering and took a job in Delhi. While living in Delhi, he came to know about the Film & Television Institute of India, for which he applied but couldn’t make it. Meanwhile, he became very curious about Cinema so he quit his job and came to Mumbai. There he met Manjul Sinha, a filmmaker and started training under him. Although he was learning a lot, he was not satisfied so he tried again in FTII and this time he got selected. During those three years, he worked with many big filmmakers and slowly his entire personality got transformed into a better version of himself.

Thereafter, Sudipto worked on a project with Merchant Ivory Productions in Mumbai and then went to Kolkata as his parents shifted there after retiring. He worked there for a couple of years and then again came to Mumbai and worked for the Television industry. He continued to do his work in both the cities occasionally. So far he has worked for twenty years in this industry in which he has done many projects like working in the television industry, making documentary films and short films. Apart from this, at a very young age, he also forayed into teaching in various filmmaking schools for not having any regular income from filmmaking business. There came a moment when he was stuck in his career and even thought of giving up his passion of filmmaking. He took a break from everything. He ended up doing M.A. in Film Studies from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. After that, he taught fundamentals of Cinema at FTII for two years and switched to Whistling Woods and has been teaching there till date.

Sudipto narrates his struggles in the industry. He says he stumbled a lot and worked very hard. But he says that success is something that does not come very easily especially in this industry for it being an unstable field. Yet he kept on moving forward and turned his career towards the direction of teaching in this industry.

Sudipto considers Ritvik Kumar Ghatak and Satyajit Ray as his role models for being the voice of their community and because they are big names in the filmmaking industry. He also draws inspiration from Jibanananda Das, a Bengali Poet and Pakistani writer, Saadat Hasan Manto. His FTII Professor Chhabria is also his role model for having faith in him and inspiring him to move forward in this industry.

Advising the young filmmakers, Sudipto says that no matter what the technology is, try to find your own voice and bring in your own subjective element into your filmmaking. Bring what you are to your work, make your originality and you will definitely get its audience. Be true to your purpose of making any film and work on it to go a long way.

Sudipto enjoys going to different places and spending time alone in his spare time.

If Sudipto had a Time Machine, he would like to revisit the forgotten moments of his past and would think of doing those things differently.
