Swimming from a very young age, Sucheta won various victories in her life and has gained many life lessons. She has covered 62 km by swimming for nineteen hours straight in an ocean.

Sucheta Deb Burman is a Swimmer and Founder at Open Water Swimmer’s Foundation.

Sucheta was born in Agartala and raised in Bangalore. She completed her education at St. Joseph’s University. Sucheta’s aim is to revive nature.

When asked about her interest in swimming, Sucheta says that her father is a NIS swimming coach and her mother is also a swimming coach, and therefore, developing an interest in swimming was natural for her. She says that she started swimming at the early age of four and chose her career in the field.

She says that she took up a job for a while in between and stopped swimming, but in 2017 Nisha Millet restarted an AUSTSWIM certified swimming pool in Bangalore, and she again started swimming. She says that she met a lot of people around her and everybody appreciated her and motivated her to learn more. That is where her journey started, and she has never stopped since then.

Sharing her journey and her challenges as a professional swimmer, Sucheta says that nothing comes easy, one needs to work hard to achieve something. She says that there are a lot of skin and other diseases that come with swimming, and it is not easy to maintain a pool. Further, she says that hard work and overall fitness are really important in order to become a good swimmer.

Sucheta says that open-water swimming doesn’t happen overnight, it happens with the experience you have gathered over the years. She says that experiences vary every time you swim.

Sucheta says that there have been a lot of compromises and sacrifices, and her journey was not at all easy. She says that there are a lot of things you need to decide whether you should or you shouldn't do, which sounds easy but is not. However, winning the race and holding the Indian flag after the win is worth all the sacrifices and compromises. Her journey was tough, but was very satisfying and overwhelming.

Talking about her achievements, Sucheta says that as an athlete she is not young, so everything she does becomes ten times harder, but eventually finishing that thing is an achievement. She says that she has faced a lot of failures like she failed to complete a two-way swim but created a one-way record in that too. She was not successful in a night swimming competition in Mumbai, but still, she managed to swim 40 km for seven and a half hours and overcame the fear of swimming at night. She says that she has failed a lot many times but getting up after her failure is what matters the most for her. Failing in competitions, she was able to come far stronger, better, and more prepared for the future to come.

Speaking about her role models, Sucheta says that her father is her coach. Her mother and her brother are her role models. Further, Nisha Millet and her other swimming buddies encourage her the most to swim. Also, her boatmen in Rameshwaram have been a support for her. Advising the upcoming swimmers and sportspersons, Sucheta says that we are all human beings and if she can do it, anybody can do it. She says that we all have the determination and strength to fight through and the strength to perceive, and we all should do it. By doing the work that is your passion and the work that you love, you will be able to definitely achieve your goal.

Giving some tips for the swimmers, Sucheta says that swimming is a phenomenal life skill to have, even if you are not doing it professionally.

Talking about her life mantra, Sucheta believes that everything happens for a reason and one should always move forward in life.
