Dr. Subhash Chandra Sharma is the founder and chairman of the Jaipur-based NGO R.K. Sansthan, which works in the field of entrepreneurship development. In the beginning, the NGO was formed to promote cultural and theatre activities, but over time, it diversified into social work, especially entrepreneurship development training.
The NGO focuses on promoting self-employment, new emerging technologies, and ways of livelihood. Its motto is ‘Dedicated to Foster Entrepreneurship’. It also works in the fields of sanitation and hygiene, health, and women’s welfare, among others. It conducts training programs promoting ‘Concept to Completion’ for budding entrepreneurs.
Subhash remembers his childhood, when he had to change schools almost every year due to the transferable nature of his father’s job, who was in Rajasthan Police. He has lived in many districts of Rajasthan. After 12th grade, he took admission to a Rajasthan University college in Jaipur for his B.Com. He went on to do a M.Com. in Business Administration and an LLB. Then he joined an organization called Rajasthan Consultancy Organization as a project officer. While in service he simultaneously completed MBA, PhD and also a Diploma in Rural Development.
Long back in 1982, he attended a training camp organized by the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India, which changed his life. He became a trainer and, for ten years, conducted several training programs all over Rajasthan. He addressed different target groups in his training programs. He encouraged many young entrepreneurs to start their own enterprises. He worked for some time in the Haryana Rural Industry Consultancy and then went to Gwalior to work as an assistant professor in an organization there. Later, he came back to Rajasthan and started his NGO.
Subhash shares that he has faced a lot of struggle all his life. The financial condition of his family was not that good in the beginning. As his parents were ill, he came back from Gwalior, quitting his job there. There was always an element of uncertainty. He did not know how he would survive by working for NGOs. But he says he kept faith in himself and faced the challenges undeterred.
When discussing his achievements, Subhash highlights his greatest accomplishment as his life's journey, starting at the lowest rung and eventually rising to the position of leading his organization. He also considers it an achievement to have received positive feedback from individuals he has trained, many of whom have achieved success in their lives. He has received a lot of recognition and awards from various organizations for his work. He is invited as a visiting or guest faculty member to many institutes, organizations, and universities.
Subhash says he always had an interest in social work. When he was in college, he joined the NSS. He became a volunteer for the ‘Saksharta Abhiyaan’ and visited slums and villages to teach illiterate people. He was also interested in theatre. Once, he attended a camp, which proved to be a turning point in his life. The camp instilled in him a desire to serve society.
Subhash says COVID was the most difficult time of his life. He had to face personal, physical, and financial hardships. His family was infected with Corona and were hospitalized. But he fought the challenge with grit and determination. Things are looking up now.
In his free time, he interacts with people engaged in theatre. He also reads a lot of books. He also likes gardening.
When asked about leadership, he says it should come through behaviour. A true leader should show initiative, set standards, and lead by example.
His message is that you must have clear goals in life. You will have a positive self-concept and work hard to achieve your goals, as there are no shortcuts in life.
