Shubham Chyavan is the owner of DanSutra - a Kathak Dance Academy.
Shubham hails from Ranchi. She was born in Aurangabad, Bihar and later moved to Hazaribagh to complete her schooling. Then after completing her graduation in professional Kathak, she moved to Delhi to pursue her designing course but didn’t complete it due to some issues. When she returned home she was mentally and emotionally disturbed, and Kathak was the only thing that nursed her.
Shubham says, growing up, she was not only a talented dancer but also a bright student and thus her parents wanted her to make a career in academics. However, when she won a dance show hosted by celebrity guests, her parents realized her potential and supported her in refining her dancing talent.
Shubham’s journey was not a smooth one though. She says that initially when she decided to choose Kathak as a career, she was taunted and humiliated by many. She also had to struggle with less recognition and opportunities. However, she stuck to her decision and finally sailed through.
Talking about her achievements, Shubham says that she has participated in numerous dance competitions like the ones organized by Patna Doordarshan, and has won many of them too. The biggest of them all for her was winning the dance competition hosted by celebrity guests.
To the people who want to come to the field of Kathak, Shubham says that you must ignore the people who taunt you. Also, she says, you must work extremely hard as classical dance forms are very tough to learn. She further says that finding a good mentor is also vital for learning Kathak properly.
During her free time, Shubham likes listening to music, crafting, and exploring various cuisines.
Sharing her experience of the COVID pandemic, Shubham says that her dance academy took a toll due to the lockdown as she had opened it in 2019, and it was halted even before it could gain momentum. Personally, she says that she enjoyed the free time with her family.
Shubham says that her students’ growth and their parents’ positive feedback is what keeps her going.
