Grab every opportunity that you get in life; never let it go.
Shreyasi Gopinath is a Bharatanatyam artist and Director at Shreyasi Gopinath Dance Academy.
Shreyasi’s family belongs to Kerala, but she was born and brought up in Delhi.
Shreyasi shares that she completed her education until the 10th grade in Delhi itself. She did her graduation and post-graduation from the Kalakshetra Foundation in Dance, Music, and Art Forms of India. Simultaneously, she also completed her graduation in Psychology from Madras University. She says her family has always been supportive of her career decisions.
Sharing about her journey, Shreyasi says that she started learning Bharatanatyam at the age of seven. Learning an art form was encouraged in her family, and her grandmother took her to join dance classes, where she learned under the guidance of her guru. She feels fortunate enough to have learned from the Kalakshetra Foundation and to have worked with many senior artists.
Talking about her achievements, Shreyasi says that she performed her Arangetram in 2007. She has received a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture, GOI, for dance. She is the head of the Cultural Center on Reunion Island, which is part of the Consulate General of India through the ICCR and the ministry of external affairs. She was conferred with the Rukmini Devi Smriti Samman from the government of Odisha and has received many other awards from several organizations. She has performed at the Surya Festival and across the world. She also conducts workshops and promotes Bharatanatyam in rural areas.
Talking about her mistakes, Shreyasi says that she should have completed her 12th grade before joining Kalakshetra. Her biggest problem when she started her journey was that she did not know how to promote herself and take her own stand as an artist. Although, she has learned from her mistakes and taken the opportunities that came to her.
Shreyasi’s life mantra is to be happy and also keep her family happy.
To all the young aspirants, Shreyasi’s advice is to have multiple modes of income because artists are not paid enough and to keep their horizons as wide as possible in terms of profession. Make use of social media to explore different opportunities, says Shreyasi.
