Rise above fear, and your story will inspire.
Shrenik Shah, a stage IV vocal cord cancer survivor from Ahmedabad, has spent the last 27 years living a life many would find unimaginable. Diagnosed with cancer in his throat in 1997, he lost his ability to speak naturally but refused to let this define him. Today, he uses a special device called Electrolarynx to communicate and continues to inspire countless people with his resilience and determination.
The same voice that was once rejected has now been used to deliver over 9,000 hours of talks across the globe, inspiring and touching the lives of over 100,000 people. Shah is proud to hold the distinction of being the world's first TEDx speaker with a voice generated by an electrolarynx. In the past six months alone, he has delivered five TEDx talks, a testament to his extraordinary ability to turn adversity into opportunity.
One of the crowning moments of Shrenik Shah’s journey came on July 23, 2023, when he was featured on the iconic Times Square screens in New York City every hour, without spending a single penny. This achievement, a dream for many, symbolizes not just his personal success but also his role as a proud Indian and a committed global speaker.
Shrenik Shah now serves as a Professional Speaker, Mental Health Awareness Coach and Mentor and Patient Ambassador for the Indian Cancer Society. He is also a moderator for live sessions under the title ‘Fridays With Shrenik’. As of now, he has completed numerous such sessions and has more lined up. His ability to transform his speaking disability into a tool for empowerment and inspiration is nothing short of extraordinary.
For him, the focus is not on what he has achieved but on how he has transformed his challenges and adversities into opportunities for growth and success.
Reflecting on his major achievements, Shrenik Shah highlights several milestones that hold a special place in his heart. Among these is his accomplishment as a TEDx speaker at TEDx VNRVJIET, an experience that allowed him to share his story on a prestigious global platform.
Another deeply meaningful achievement is the publication of his biography, ‘Shahenshah,’ which chronicles his extraordinary life journey. Holding the book with pride, Shah describes it as a testament to his resilience, determination, and unwavering spirit, symbolizing his ability to overcome adversity and inspire countless others.
As he celebrates his 28th year as a cancer survivor, Shrenik Shah reflects on his journey from what he calls Life 1.0 to Life 2.0. Before being diagnosed with cancer, he was a dynamic entrepreneur in international marketing, traveling globally and working with clients in Europe, America, South America, and Africa.
Cancer Survivor Shah asks everyone to imagine a life without spoken words—a reality he lives every day. He describes the frustration and helplessness of being unable to express your thoughts, even as a thought leader and speaker. He recalls standing before eager audiences, prepared to share wisdom, only to feel his words trapped in his mouth and see the confusion and impatience on their faces. This experience, he says, has shaped his life and his mission.
Known as "The Cowboy" and "The Speedster" by his European clients, Shah frequently boarded up to seven flights within 30 hours to attend meetings in hotels, restaurants, and airports. For a decade, from 1986 to 1996, he spent much of his life at 37,000 feet, traveling to 33 countries and undertaking over 150 overseas trips, building a successful career and earning a reputation for his relentless work ethic.
In 1997, his life took a drastic turn. What began as slight hoarseness in his voice developed into whispering, leaving him unable to speak naturally. Shah, who maintained a healthy lifestyle—no smoking, no tobacco, vegetarianism, and no alcohol—never suspected cancer. By August of that year, he experienced severe breathing difficulties, describing it like drowning in a pool. Then, on August 25, 1997, he coughed up blood for the first time. Alarmed, he consulted his family physician, Dr. Srivardasa Trivedi, who advised him to see a cancer surgeon.
Shrenik Shah's journey took a dramatic turn when he and his family consulted with cancer surgeon Dr. Kaustubh Patel in Ahmedabad. The diagnosis was dire: Shah was in the advanced stages of vocal cord cancer. Dr. Patel examined him and delivered the grim news with honesty and clarity: “Shrenik bhai, you don’t have much time left. The cancer is at an advanced stage.”
At that time, his elder son, Maulik, was studying in Sydney, while his younger son was in the 11th grade. The diagnosis was a devastating blow. However, despite facing a daunting reality, Shah, his wife, and his son did not waver. Instead of succumbing to despair or hesitation, they focused on survival. When Dr. Patel explained that the only way forward was to remove Shah’s voice box, rendering him unable to speak naturally for the rest of his life; their decision was immediate and resolute. “Doctor, what is to be done?” they asked.
The answer was straightforward: immediate surgery. Shah’s reaction was equally decisive: “When do you want me to get admitted?” Without further questions, he committed to the treatment, prioritizing life over voice.
The next day, Shrenik Shah was admitted to the hospital, and a scoping procedure revealed the gravity of his condition. A large tumor atop his vocal cords was obstructing his trachea, making it difficult for him to breathe. The urgency was clear. However, unlike today’s rapid diagnostic technologies, biopsy results in 1997 took several days to arrive. When the pathology report confirmed stage IV vocal cord cancer, the course of action was set.
On September 5, 1997, Shrenik Shah underwent a grueling nine-and-a-half-hour surgery. His neck was opened, and the tumor was removed along with his natural voice box. The operation was massive, leaving scars, forever altering his life, but it achieved its most crucial goal: survival. As Shrenik reflects, "The pivotal benefit was that I survived. When there was no hope of survival, life took a 360-degree turn.”
The road to recovery was arduous. Following the surgery, Shah endured 30 rounds of Radiotherapy, which turned his skin black like charcoal. The intense treatment took a toll on his body, but his resolve remained unbroken. For three months, from September to December of 1997, unable to speak, he relied on pen and paper to communicate.
He likened himself to a car without an engine—functional yet unable to fulfill its true purpose. This phase was catastrophic, filled with emotional turmoil and a sense of helplessness as he struggled to adapt to his new reality.
In the midst of this struggle, Shah's cancer surgeon suggested an alternative: the use of an Electrolarynx, a device that could help him speak. This, however, came with its own challenges. The device was sourced from the United States, but Ahmedabad lacked trainers who could guide him in using it effectively. Yet, Shah refused to be defeated. Driven by sheer determination and a relentless will to overcome his disability, he practiced diligently, standing in front of a mirror for a week. Through perseverance, he taught himself how to use the device, eventually mastering the art of communication with his new, mechanical voice.
When he first began speaking with the electrolarynx in December 1997, the response from people was far from welcoming. The robotic tone of his voice startled and even frightened those around him. Shrenik Shah recalls how people would react with shock, confusion, and even fear, often avoiding him altogether. This rejection could have easily discouraged anyone, but Shrenik, ever the problem-solver, embraced it as a divine intervention. He chose to view this rejection as an opportunity to push boundaries rather than as a limitation.
Speaking about his journey towards becoming a TEDx speaker, Shrenik Shah takes a philosophical approach. He introduces his "Five Ps" framework, which has guided his path to success. The first "P" is Purpose—living a life driven by meaningful goals and intentions. The second is Priority—focusing on what truly matters and aligning one’s efforts accordingly. The third "P" is Passion—pursuing life’s endeavors with enthusiasm and dedication. The fourth is Perseverance—maintaining steadfastness and resilience in the face of challenges. Finally, the fifth "P" is Performance—striving to deliver excellence in all undertakings. This framework has been central to Shah’s ability to overcome adversity and achieve remarkable milestones.
Shrenik Shah elaborates on the importance of performance, sharing how wisdom and knowledge, no matter how vast, must be translated into tangible actions to make an impact. As a professional speaker, he feels a divine connection whenever he is on stage, whether it’s a live session, offline talk, or interview. He describes this experience as being in "Vrindavan," surrounded by Lord Krishna’s presence. For Shrenik, speaking becomes effortless when guided by the heart rather than the mind, which he believes is free from manipulation. This sense of divine alignment fuels his passion and enables him to deliver powerful, authentic messages without struggle.
His dream of becoming a TEDx speaker had been a long-standing aspiration. He meticulously curated his TEDx profile and shared it with friends for feedback. However, due to their busy schedules, his profile went unrevised for months. Eventually, Shah decided not to wait any longer. He realized that he could not let his dream remain on hold due to others’ commitments. Determined to take charge of his own path, he began sharing his TEDx profile directly with organizations and other platforms.
For Shrenik Shah, speaking on a TED platform was not about creating stories but about sharing the raw, unfiltered truths of his life’s journey. So, late one night, he sent an email with his profile, and by 9 AM the following morning, he received a call from a young gentleman who was deeply moved by his journey. This interaction led to Shah being invited to deliver his first TEDx talk on June 23, 2024, in Kalyan, Mumbai.
This pivotal moment marks a significant milestone in Shrenik Shah's journey. He became the first vocal cord cancer survivor and speech-disabled individual to deliver a TEDx talk. With the blessings of Lord Krishna and his relentless determination, he went on to deliver five more TEDx talks within six months, including sessions at Kalyan’s TEDxRambaug, Indore’s TEDxSAGEUniversity, SVIT’s TEDxSVITVasad, NHL’s TEDxNHLMMC, and Hyderabad’s TEDxVNRVJIET. His ability to inspire audiences worldwide with his unique voice and powerful narrative exemplifies his unwavering commitment to turning personal adversity into a message of hope and resilience.
Shrenik Shah reflects on his upbringing in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, during the late 1960s. He recalls that in the late 1960s, the medium of education in Gujarat was predominantly Gujarati, unlike today, where English-medium schools are widespread. He shares that there were only two English-medium schools in Ahmedabad at that time—St. Xavier's and Mount Carmel, both considered elite institutions.
However, as the youngest child in his family, Shrenik’s parents decided that he should study in a Gujarati-medium school. Back then, practical guidance about the advantages of English-medium education was unavailable. Today, children begin their education in English-medium schools right from nursery, but for Shrenik, learning English didn’t begin until the eighth standard.
He vividly remembers starting to learn the English alphabet for the first time in Class 8. His initial efforts at writing the alphabet were clumsy and unpolished, but Shah emphasizes that passion can transform any challenge into an opportunity. He developed a deep love for the English language, teaching himself through perseverance and dedication. This passion propelled him forward, and eventually, he completed his Bachelor of Science degree entirely in the English medium, overcoming his initial struggles with the language.
After graduation, Shrenik Shah joined his family business, where his journey of mastering English continued. He credits his maternal uncle, a former Assistant General Manager (AGM) at a nationalized bank, for helping him improve his communication skills. In those days, there were no computers or advanced technology. Letters were typed by stenographers and required manual editing. Shah worked with a stenographer for three years. This constant practice not only improved his English but also boosted his confidence in written and spoken communication.
During this time, he also worked as a Production Manager in his family business, overseeing the manufacturing of dyes for textiles, leather, and paper. Shah held this role for 14 years, but he eventually realized that his true strength lay in marketing rather than production. This epiphany led him to transition into international marketing, where he traveled extensively, built global networks, and honed his skills as a communicator.
Reflecting on his upbringing, Shrenik Shah credits his parents for instilling the values in him that define him today. He describes his father as a man of discipline, courage, and integrity, who also served as an arbitrator. His father taught him resilience and fairness. His mother, Sharda Ben, embodied empathy and compassion, qualities that Shah says he inherited from her. Together, their influence created a strong foundation of values that he carries forward in his life.
Shrenik Shah acknowledges that these qualities—discipline from his father and empathy from his mother—have shaped him into the person he is today. He believes that his courage, confidence, and humility are direct reflections of the values his parents passed down to him.
Shrenik Shah shares that one of the most profound aspects of his journey has been his transformation from an introvert to a global speaker. As a child, he lacked the confidence to even raise his hand in class. Even when he knew the answer, he couldn’t muster the courage to speak. He recalls having only six friends and avoiding public speaking entirely.
Fast forward to today, and Shrenik Shah has hundreds and thousands of well-wishers and friends worldwide. Remarkably, he has met only 10% of them in person. The rest are individuals he has connected with virtually, through his story and work. Shah describes these people as the fuel that powers him—like the wings of an Airbus A380-800, their support propels him forward, giving him the strength to take off and reach new horizons.
Shrenik Shah reflects on how courage has been essential for his growth and transformation. Before his cancer diagnosis and subsequent journey as a speaker, he had no confidence to express himself. He never imagined that he could one day inspire thousands. Shah believes that the challenges he faced—the loss of his voice and the struggles that followed—became his greatest teachers. They ignited a fire within him to rise above adversity and achieve greatness.
Today, Shah is committed to touching millions of lives through his journey. He says that his well-wishers continue to act as the driving force behind his efforts, and he remains fast, focused, and determined to make a meaningful impact on the world.
Shrenik Shah reflects on the question of who his role models are and admits that the answer may surprise many. Instead of drawing inspiration from others, he identifies three primary forces that have shaped him into the person he is today.
First, he mentions the loss of his voice, which initially seemed like a devastating blow but ultimately became a defining part of his journey. Second, he credits the challenges he faced after losing his voice, as they tested his resilience and ignited a fire within him to overcome adversity. Third, he highlights the passion that burned within him, a relentless drive to rise above his circumstances and achieve greatness.
Shrenik Shah shares how these forces pushed him toward remarkable accomplishments and recognitions. In 2011, he began counseling others, starting with one-on-one sessions and gradually expanding to group-based counseling. While he acknowledges that he can never become a doctor, he sees his role as a guide and a lifesaver for those battling cancer. He believes his guidance, when authentic and heartfelt, can save lives and bring purpose to his own. He considers the survival and recovery of cancer patients he has counseled as his greatest achievements, even more fulfilling than any accolade.
Having touched the lives of over 100,000 individuals, Shrenik Shah attributes his transformation to each public speaking engagement, podcast appearance, and interview. These experiences have shaped him into an unstoppable force. As he frequently reiterates, he lives by the Five P’s: Purpose, Priority, Passion, Perseverance, and Performance. These guiding principles have made a profound difference in his life and continue to inspire his journey.
At 73, Shrenik Shah acknowledges that he doesn’t have another 73 years ahead of him. This realization drives him to navigate life in the “fast lane,” approaching each day with urgency and determination. “I am living my life like a jet,” he says, “because I know for sure that I don’t have endless time. I want to accomplish everything possible in this lifetime.”
Cancer Ambassador Shah shares two songs that hold a special place in his heart. The first is “Lag Jaa Gale” by Lata Mangeshkar, from the film ‘Woh Kaun Thi?’ He especially resonates with the lines:“Humko mili hain aaj yeh ghadiyaan naseeb se, Phir aapke naseeb mein yeh baat ho na ho, Shaayad phir is janam mein mulaaqaat ho na ho.”
The second song is “Meri Aawaaz Hi Meri Pehchaan Hai” by Lata Mangeshkar, from the film ‘Kinara’. This song deeply reflects his own journey, as he relates to how his voice, despite the challenges, became his unique identity and a source of inspiration for many.
Shrenik Shah emphasizes the extraordinary role his voice has played in his journey. Despite losing his natural voice, the “differently-enabled” voice he gained through technology has become his unique selling proposition (USP). He explains how his voice immediately sets him apart, leaving a lasting impression on those he interacts with, whether it’s cancer surgeons or patients in need. “I never have to introduce myself twice,” he says with pride. “The moment someone hears my voice, they recognize me as an example of resilience.”
He describes this voice as both a gift and a responsibility. It has become his identity, enabling him to advocate for cancer survivors and provide urgent support to those in need. He credits this opportunity to divine blessings and the unwavering support of his well-wishers.
Shrenik Shah dedicates his success and journey to caregivers around the world, including his wife, Nilam Shah. He emphasizes that no cancer survivor’s life is complete without the support of caregivers. Their role, he says, is invaluable, providing the strength and encouragement needed to navigate the challenges of recovery. “I want to dedicate this talk to every single caregiver on this planet,” Shrenik declares, expressing his deep gratitude.
Shrenik Shah also encourages everyone to live in the moment and avoid procrastination. “Don’t keep things pending for tomorrow because you never know what’s in store,” he advises. “Do it today, do it now, and be unstoppable.” This philosophy, he believes, is the magic of life—embracing the present and taking bold steps toward one’s goals.
With unshakable gratitude for his well-wishers and the blessings of life, Shrenik Shah continues to soar, committed to making a difference in the lives of millions.
Shrenik Shah recounts that during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, a close friend from Delhi informed him that someone was interested in writing his biography. Initially surprised, as he had never considered himself the subject of a biography, he connected with a young author from Delhi named Jasveer Singh Dangi. After a 40 min conversation, Jasveer expressed his enthusiasm to pen Shrenik's life story.
Excited by the proposal, Shah agreed, and the project began. Jasveer sent him a detailed questionnaire with 15 to 17 questions and gave him 10 days to respond. To Jasveer Singh’s surprise, Shrenik completed all the questions in just three days, explaining, “It was my real-life journey—no manipulation, with no fiction. Everything came straight from my heart.” Once the questionnaire was complete, he also asked for some pictures.
As part of the process, the author also requested testimonials to include in the book. Shrenik Shah reached out to 30 individuals from India and abroad, all of whom very kindly sent their testimonials. These were included in the book, spanning from pages 29 to 109, presented in a horizontal format and left unedited to preserve their authenticity.
When it was time to finalize the book’s title, Jasveer Singh proposed naming it "Shahenshah". Shrenik Shah immediately objected, stating, “I am a common man, a proud Indian, and I do not deserve such a grandiose title.” However, Jasveer was adamant, even issuing an ultimatum: either accept the title or the project would not proceed. Reluctantly, Shah agreed, prioritizing the completion of the book over the title.
This collaboration culminated in the publication of the biography titled "Shahenshah: Story of Shrenik Shah, the Cancer Conqueror," released as both an e-book and paperback.
Due to the pandemic, the book could not be officially launched in an auditorium or through a grand ceremony. Shah admits that, because of his focus on public speaking and other commitments, he has not had much time to promote the book. Despite this, the biography remains a meaningful testament to his life’s journey.
Shrenik Shah often emphasizes the importance of building a connection between the head, the heart, and the gut. He believes that aligning these three aspects leads to a more authentic and impactful life. This holistic alignment has been instrumental in his confidence and consistency on global platforms.
Reflecting on his journey, he mentions that he has appeared confidently and consistently on global stages, including podcasts, interviews, and talks. One particularly memorable moment was when he was invited to deliver a talk at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA), India’s premier management institute.
At IIM Ahmedabad, Shrenik Shah had the opportunity to meet Professor Vishal Gupta, a distinguished faculty member at the Ashank Desai Centre for Leadership and Organizational Development. During their one-hour discussion, Professor Gupta invited him to participate in a leadership event on March 24, 2023, where Shah would share the stage with Pujya Gnanvatsal Swami, a renowned spiritual leader and motivational speaker.
For Shah, this invitation was a dream come true, a moment where his patience and pure intentions came to fruition. He reflects on this experience as one of profound recognition, where his dreams materialized swiftly, reaffirming his belief in perseverance and purpose.
Shrenik Shah feels that he is truly blessed by the Almighty, and one of those blessings comes in the form of his philosophy, "Freedom from Fear." This idea reflects his victory over the fears he faced during his battle with stage IV vocal cord cancer and the challenges of losing his natural voice.
Shrenik Shah’s journey has also earned him significant global recognition. Out of more than 21,000 global nominations, he was honored with the Patient Leader Hero Award by WEGO Health, the world’s largest healthcare advocacy platform based in the United States. He proudly describes this achievement as a reflection of his identity as a proud Indian and a testament to his ability to create a meaningful impact on a global stage. These accolades underscore his unwavering commitment to inspiring others and advocating for resilience in the face of adversity.
Shrenik Shah shares that his favorite quote, which guides his life, is: "I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul." This quote holds deep meaning for him as it reflects his journey of strength and determination.
Courageous Shah shows a poster that expresses his gratitude for overcoming challenges, even with his speaking disability. The poster reads: "Thank God, my forever speaking disability is history. Invictus Life 2.0: Humbled to say, I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul." For Shah, these words are not just a quote—they represent his belief in staying strong, being thankful, and trusting in a higher power.
He again humbly shows a poster that says : “It's a thrilling life even after cancer.” He says that it is because “He is dedicated to the will to win.”
Shrenik Shah shares heartfelt advice for young Indians and aspiring individuals who seek guidance in life. He emphasizes the importance of three simple yet powerful principles that can make anyone unstoppable and help them achieve their greatest potential. The first piece of advice he offers is that “attitude is everything”. He urges people to adopt a respectful and humble attitude toward everyone, regardless of their profession, age, gender, or background. Respect, he explains, should be free from discrimination, as it reflects one’s character and values.
The second principle he discusses is the importance of time. Shrenik advises against wasting precious moments of life by finding faults in others. Instead, he encourages people to focus on their own growth and progress, emphasizing that investing in oneself is the key to success.
The third and final principle he shares is about empathy. To become a people’s person, he highlights the necessity of showing genuine empathy, staying committed, and delivering results that go above and beyond expectations.
He advises delivering not just 100 percent but 500 percent in every endeavor, as this extraordinary effort creates miracles. He assures his audience that by following these principles, they could become unstoppable, make miracles, achieve remarkable success, and touch extraordinary heights. Shah extends his blessings, wishing that Lord Krishna or whichever higher power one believes in would provide unconditional guidance and support.
As a cancer survivor, Shrenik Shah feels it is his duty to address the misconceptions surrounding the disease. Serving as a Patient Ambassador and Moderator for the Indian Cancer Society, he emphasizes that while cancer is often seen as a dreadful disease, it is not the end of life.
He advises cancer patients to place their trust in medical professionals and follow the prescribed treatment protocols diligently. Shah warns against seeking unreliable information online or following unverified treatments spread through web browsers, as cancer treatment varies significantly from person to person and cannot be generalized.
Cancer Messenger Shah passionately urges people not to gamble their lives or make risky decisions that could jeopardize their health and family. He emphasizes that cancer specialists are dedicated professionals who work tirelessly to save lives, and it is crucial to trust their expertise. He encourages patients to avoid shortcuts and stay committed to their treatment plans, as doing otherwise could have devastating consequences.
Shrenik Shah offers his support to anyone struggling to get medical appointments or access resources, stating that he is always available 24/7 to assist in any way he can. His dedication to supporting others is a testament to his commitment to making a difference in the lives of cancer patients and survivors.
For those who wish to connect with Shrenik Shah, he shares his contact information and highlights his strong online presence. His official website is shrenik-shah.com. Additionally, he is active on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, and YouTube. Shah encourages everyone to search for his name or terms like "cancer winner" or “cancer winner Shrenik” on web browsers to find his complete contact details and gain insights into his inspiring journey. He assures everyone that he is always approachable and just one call away, eager to assist anyone who reaches out to him.
In his concluding note, Shrenik Shah expresses profound gratitude to his viewers for allowing him to share his remarkable journey. He describes the opportunity to speak on #MeriKahani as incredible, fabulous, and deeply meaningful.
Shrenik Shah reflects on his life, describing it as an inspiring journey of resilience, reinvention, and manifestation. Despite the challenges posed by his differently-enabled voice, he has embraced every moment as an opportunity to connect with and inspire others.
Shrenik Shah emphasizes that well wishes are the greatest gift he could receive, as they provide the strength and motivation to continue his mission of touching millions of lives in the years to come.
He expresses his sincere gratitude to every individual who has supported him and wishes everyone a commendable year filled with health, success, and growth as they enter 2025 and beyond.
