Shikha Singhal is a jewelry designer and vastu consultant based in Udaipur. The name of her studio is Neelima Jewels.
Shikha specializes in ‘Polki’ jewelry design and has been in this field for the past 18 years. She has designed many unique pieces of jewelry in contemporary and heritage styles. Her creations have been showcased in various exhibitions and fashion shows. She has customers from all over the country. Her jewelry is known for its intricate designs and high-quality materials. She also designs silver articles for gifting purposes.
Discussing her challenges, Shikha says that although designing jewelry is her passion, doing so is also an expensive endeavor. She needs to spend a lot of money on raw material and hiring knowledgeable craftspeople. She also believes that, as a woman, she has faced challenges managing this predominantly male industry, where even the artisans are slow to recognize and accept a woman's talent. Despite these obstacles, she remains determined to succeed and make a name for herself in the industry. She was always encouraged to pursue her interests by both her husband and her in-laws.
During the COVID pandemic, her main challenge was how to retain her staff because she couldn't afford to lose them. She helped them during their trying time. Shikha believes that even though COVID was an issue on a professional level, individuals were content on a personal level. But throughout this time, she still received orders and created some stunning jewelry. She thinks that her work makes people happy and improves their self-esteem.
When asked about her role models, Shikha says that she does not have any particular role models and that instead, she has learned from her experiences and the people around her. She does, however, aspire to set an example for her children, which motivates her to give her all when working to advance in her field.
Sharing her success mantra, Shikha says she believes in “I am possible”. She always tries to make every job possible and sees challenges as opportunities to showcase her talent.
Shikha values teamwork over leadership, so she takes care to acknowledge each member's contributions and place them on the team. She is aware of this because every member of the team is doing an excellent job in their respective roles, which ultimately results in her work being flawless and easy to do.
Shikha advises aspiring young jewelry designers to prioritize design before choosing a metal to work with. According to her, jewelers are artists who simply use their imagination and creativity to create their designs without considering the metal. She suggests they believe in themselves and their creativity, and they could do wonders. She suggests they believe in themselves, and their creativity, and they could do wonders.
