Shashi Bhushan Gupta is an Advocate and a social worker with a vision to provide free legal aid to the underprivileged.
Shashi Bhushan Gupta was born and brought up in a village in the Karauli district of Rajasthan. His father was also a lawyer, and growing up in a lawyer’s family he got to know that court cases took many years to settle. This became his inspiration to become a lawyer himself and try to help poor people with free legal services.
Shashi has been a lawyer in the Rajasthan High Court since 1999. He implemented his idea of providing free legal aid in 2002 by establishing the “Legal Helpline Society” with his colleagues. He got the inspiration for this idea from a former Judge of the Rajasthan High court who had introduced the concept of legal clinics. His Legal Helpline Society got support from other advocates too and many joined in with the idea. They regularly organise camps and legal awareness programs for the poor people and offer free legal services too. They have also published several free-of-cost books regarding legal rights for common people. Shashi himself has also written a book on women’s legal rights, explaining the legal rights of females in a very simple way.
Shashi considers the former President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam to be his role model. His dedication, simplicity, and patriotism inspire Shashi. And professionally, his role model is his former mentor Mr. Rafiq who is currently serving as the Chief Justice at the Madhya Pradesh high court, Shashi admires his honesty and punctuality.
Shashi believes that law is a noble profession and should be treated as one. As a lawyer, one should put his clients’ appeals in a competent and honest manner. He also says that while there are various kinds of courses available to become a lawyer, what eventually matters is how patient and hardworking you are.
Shashi spends his free time reading books and playing his harmonium. He also tries to contribute his time for the welfare of animals and birds. He used to write too, but he eventually couldn’t keep up with that due to his busy schedule. And his newest interest is astrology. But reading remains his most favorite hobby.
