Sharmila Sharma is a Contemporary Painting Artist currently based in Delhi. She hails from Gwalior where she pursued her Diploma in Fine Arts along with her MA. Sharma aims to spread the message of her art through stories and series.
Her achievements in the field of art include winning prizes at school, and being felicitated with the Tulsidas Puruskar during the final year of her diploma course. Later, she created a beautiful painting on ‘Ram of Ayodhya’ for which she got the first prize. Her work has also been selected for an AIFACS Exhibition and twice for exhibitions in Amritsar in 2023 and 2024. Sharma had also won silver, bronze, and gold medals in art competitions conducted online during COVID-19. She mostly used acrylic colors in those competitions. When she participated in an exhibition for the first time in 2021, six of her paintings were sold.
She also sells her paintings online through her Instagram handle @sharmila.shsrma.artist where all her work is showcased.
Talking about her journey into the field of arts, Sharmila Sharma shares that she started by working for interior designers but now she also organizes art shows and has organized some in Delhi at the India Habitat Centre, the Lalit Kala Academi, the Bharat Bhavan, and a few shows in Madhya Pradesh as well. She has done both solo and group shows. She primarily works with water colors, acrylic, and oil-based paintings. Currently, her show is being organized at a five star hotel- The Lalit, in Delhi.
Sharmila Sharma also used to give art classes in Lucknow but after shifting to Delhi, she has been focusing on herself and her art work.
When asked about her inspiration for entering the field of art, Sharma cites her father, who was hardworking and honest in his work. Growing up, she often noticed him drawing, and inspired by him, she aspired to pursue something creative and meaningful. Her friends and family also motivated her to advance in the art field and develop her talent.
Reflecting on her early days, Sharma shares that she was born in Gwalior and recalls participating in and winning art competitions. She also remembers being banned from participating in contests when she was in the 11th grade, to give other students a chance to win. Being interviewed on a radio show and giving art classes filled her with joy. Sharmila Sharma spent nine years in Lucknow, where she enjoyed teaching drawing to students and helping them with their project work.
When asked about her role models, Sharmila Sharma says that, besides her father, who inspired her to pursue art, she is grateful to her artist friends who have been her pillars of support. While she doesn't let criticism affect her, Sharma pours her heart into her work, using vibrant colors to bring her art to life. She also finds inspiration in the song "Sare Jahan Se Achha Hindustan Hamara."
Advising aspiring artists, Sharma suggests they learn new techniques and bring out a fresh perspective and creativity in their artwork.
She advises the youth to fulfil their dreams with hard work and indulge in innovation for a developed and new India.
