A Kathak dancer, Sayanee believes in learning and continuous growth. She advises fellow people to grow as humans and everything will automatically fall into place.

Sayanee Chavda is a Kolkata-based Kathak dancer who has been dancing since the age of two. She learned dancing from many people and has been performing professionally for  more than twenty years.

Recalling her childhood, Sayanee says that dance had always been the center of her childhood. Her mother had always wanted to become a dancer herself but couldn't become one due to circumstances. Her mother’s zeal to become a dancer encouraged Sayanee to become a Kathak dancer, she says.

Talking about her challenges, Sayanee says that it is very challenging to pursue a career in dance if you don't have a background of dancers in your family.  Moreover, developing good public relations is one of the biggest things that matters a lot in this field. However, she overcame the challenges by putting her work on social media and continuously learning from her fellow dancers.

Giving a brief of her mistakes, Sayanee says that even though she is doing pretty well in her field, she feels that she could have practiced and focused more on dancing while she was young. However, she has learned from her mistakes and tries to practice more every day, she says.

Sharing her accomplishments, Sayanee says that there is a long list of platforms where she has performed and got praised. However, Sayanee thinks that the biggest accomplishment that she has achieved is that she could instill a love for dance in her students and her daughter.

When asked about her role models, Sayanee says that her Guru Pandit Vijay Shankar is the one for her. Also, her religious gurus were the most impactful as they shaped her into a successful dancer. Her gurus always taught her to not get carried away by the praises and insults in life. Rather, focus on yourself.

For anybody willing to pursue a career in dancing, especially in Kathak, Sayanee advises learning from a good Guru. She says, observe and judge the Guru first, and once you select one, never question just learn, improve yourself, and keep growing.

In her free time, she loves to sing, cook, and write.
