With two decades of experience, Sapan is a Chhau dance guru who is dedicated to preserving the dance form by offering guidance to his students.

Sapan Kumar Acharya is a Chhau Dance guru at Triveni Kala Kendra Sangam, Delhi.

Sapan originally hails from Saraikela, Jharkhand. Sapan says he learned the dance from his father when he was five. His family has a history of almost 500 years practicing the dance form and he is the fifth generation of his family continuing the legacy. He says from childhood he had seen his father teaching Chhau to his pupils and he also wanted to learn the dance form.  Chhau demands internal strength, physical strength, and body balance which he found difficult to attain in his initial days but kept learning and practicing and he got better each day.

Talking about his achievements, Sapan says promoting such a historical dance form is itself an achievement to him. He takes pride in teaching Chhau to thousands of his students. He also got the chance to promote this dance form all over the world. He has trained officers of NCD, FBI, and many other institutions about the intricacies of Chhau. He was also granted a junior and senior fellowship by the government of India and was conferred with the Parangam award in 2019.

Sapan laments that Chhau is on decline and artists are quitting it as it is not sustainable in the long term for them and needs recognition from the government. He says people should be aware of this historical dance form of India and he wants to keep promoting and teaching the art.

Sapan advises all youngsters to learn Chau as it has its own health benefits. It also releases stress from our bodies and gives inner satisfaction. He says practice will make it more beautiful.

Sapan says he follows a strict routine as a Chhau dancer and maintains a healthy diet.
