Sanjana Devarajan is a Musician and Composer who feels that we need more formal education in the field of Music and Art. We should start looking at it as a career option as well.

Sanjana Devarajan was born in Coimbatore. She was brought up in Mumbai and has done her education there. She is a Songwriter, Singer, and Musician. She also does a day job to support her musical journey.

Sanjana says that she was around twelve years old when her interest in Music arose. After her graduation, she started doing a job as a Teacher. Then she started looking for a more substantial job and coincidentally got one in a Music company. It was after joining this company that Sanjana started focusing on Music again.

Sanjana has around six songs to her name and is also doing commercial work for some brands. Her music is a blend of both traditional and western tunes. She terms it Indie-pop.

Sanjana recalls that the greatest moment in her life was getting featured in the Rolling Stones India magazine after her album came out. She is glad to share that Google also recognizes her as a Music Artist on its web search.

Sanjana says that Covid has had a very traumatic effect on everyone’s life. She says that during the lockdown, she got time to work on her skill and even came out with new albums. However, she feels that her little achievements during this period are nothing when you think of the sorrow people had witnessed during the pandemic.

Sanjana shares that the biggest challenge for her was the lack of proper information and contacts. She was new in the field and knew nothing. She was only vocally trained and did not know how to play any instrument. Searching for a good collaborator to promote and produce her music was also a tough task. She says that she found her Music producer, Mayur Jumani, through social media.

Sanjana says that her father is her Role Model. She says that her father is a dedicated personality ready to take on any tough situation head-on. She also learns from other musicians and is inspired by A.R. Rehman, Amit Trivedi, Ed Shereen, and Taylor Swift.

Sanjana feels that in India there is still scope when it comes to fields like Music. Proper courses are very less and are costly. Much focus is not given to it as a career option. She laments that Art has a certain continuing stigma around it.

Sanjana advises the budding musicians to be ready for everything. No one can predict how good or bad a show or album will go. Also, she urges the youth to have a backup plan and to complete their education. She feels that education is very important in this competitive world.

Sanjana feels that everyone has to be their own leader. She says that she had to learn everything on her own to progress in life. For convincing people to collaborate with her she had to have that leadership skill.

If given a Time Machine, Sanjana would like to relive different feelings like spending a day in school, playing video games on her old desktop, and feeling the magic of  Bollywood songs in her childhood days.

In her free time, Sanjana likes to watch Bollywood movies, paint and cook.
