Sam Mazumdar is a Mind Reader, Mentalist, and Illusionist from Kolkata. He performs in corporate events and other professional shows. He also teaches magic and conducts online classes for other magicians.
Sam was born and brought up in Silchar, Assam. He completed his schooling from there itself.
Describing his journey, Sam says he was interested in magic since he was a child. Looking at his interest in magic, his maternal uncle gifted him a book on magic. After reading the book, he got more interested in learning magic. He used to look for books on magic tricks in various book stores in his town. One day, a bookstore owner, who was himself a magician, asked him to show his magic skills if he had really learned something from the books. When he demonstrated his magic skills, the bookstore owner got very impressed and asked him to come to his house . The bookstore owner taught Sam many magic tricks for almost four years. But, then, Sam’s father asked him to first complete his school education, so he had to stop learning magic.
Speaking about his struggles, Sam says he had faced many struggles in his early days. He had to work in tea factories to support his family. He worked and grew there as a professional and worked as store & production manager. But the desire to learn magic was still alive in him. He moved to Kolkata to learn magic, as he came to know that West Bengal was pretty famous for its magic and magicians. He used to work and learn magic simultaneously. His professional journey in the magic field started with his guru, Subhransh Chakrabarty who had taught him professional magic.
When asked about his achievements, Sam recalls his first achievement, which was receiving the first prize among five hundred magicians in a magic competition. After that, he also won another big competition and started doing his magic shows.
Speaking about his mistakes, Sam recalls how, due to his overconfidence, he came third in a big magic convention held in Bangalore and organized by the ace magician K.S. Ramesh. From there he learned that overconfidence is a barrier to success and decided to never become overconfident about his skills.
Describing his COVID experience, Sam says that just like darkness comes once in everyone's life, similarly, in his life also there was such darkness at that time. Along with doing magic, he also started working with Rupa And Company Limited in their sales and marketing department. He also started a wholesale business along with his job. But when the COVID-19 wave hit the country, all his money got stuck in the market. He suffered a loss of about twelve lakh rupees. He became frustrated with his life and started reading and watching motivational books and videos. Then he understood that one must not suppress his passion and always follow the heart. So, he again started revising his magic skills and did intensive research on mentalism, mind reading and hypnosis. The moment the lockdown lifted, he started marketing himself digitally and today, by continuously working hard, he has achieved an identity of his own in this field.
When asked about his role models, Sam says he considers Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam, former president of India, as his role model. He also seeks inspiration from Swami Vivekananda.
He also looks up to his family and especially his wife, who has always supported and encouraged him.
When asked which is more crucial, education or experience, Sam says according to him education is important, but experience plays a more important role in life. He says there are several people in the world who never had formal education but are experts in their domain. Attachment and dedication to your work makes you an expert without formal education, only by learning from experience.
If he gets a time machine to travel back in time, Sam would go back to his childhood and relive that time for a few days.
When he gets free time, Sam likes to spend his time researching new magic trends and techniques. He also enjoys hanging out with his family.
Sam suggests to the youth to pay balanced attention to both their work and family. Because, if the environment at home would be peaceful, then only one can get proper focus to succeed in their work.
To the aspirants who want to pursue their career as a magician, Sam advises that as the competition is rising in the field day by day, one has to put all their heart into the art of learning and practicing it to reach perfection. The aspirants have to have a little knowledge of almost every art.
