Everybody pursues their own happiness, but real life is lived for others.
Salman Nizami is a writer, politician, and social activist. He worked as a journalist for more than ten years before entering politics and becoming a member of the Indian National Congress. After reporting on the massive growth of the media in J&K, he now has a keen interest in the state's development in light of the changed security, political, and economic conditions. Salman is a frequent user of social media and contributes to many of the top national publications.
Salman recalls that he was a huge cricket fan growing up and used to play the game with his friends until late at night. He remembers that his family used to scold him for this. Being the head boy of his school gave him a different aura to enjoy, which he feels brings back the best memories of his school days.
When asked who his role models are, Salman responds that his grandfather was his first role model. Under the guidance of his grandfather, he gained a lot of knowledge. He remembers that he has enjoyed writing ever since he was a young child, and his grandfather also edited his first article before it was published in a magazine. He also used to admire Gulam Nabi Azad, a prominent national politician and former minister from Jammu and Kashmir. Following in his footsteps, he started his political career at a school in Banihal, J&K, rose to the position of president of the National Student Union of India, and eventually entered the national political arena. He draws inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi as well, whose teachings he lives by.
Speaking about his achievements, Salman says that, as a small-town boy, it was really challenging for him to join journalism and then politics at the national level. For a boy who traveled far from a small village to Delhi, he believes that making a name for himself in national politics is itself a success for him. Despite the harsh criticism and numerous controversies he also encountered, he never gave up and turned his flaws into assets.
Reflecting on his COVID experience, Salman says the pandemic has taught everyone to get physically fit, eat a well-balanced diet, and maintain a healthy sanitary routine. He also became particular about his health, and now he is following a strict routine for healthy diet and exercise.
Salman thinks both education and experience are important in life. He believes an educated person can shake up the whole government and bring about change in society.
When asked whether he is a born leader or a leader by experience, Salman says it is the influence of family and society on a person that makes him a leader in his life. He also believes that it is determined by a person's desires. If a person aspires to be a leader, he will gain the necessary experience. He uses his own example, saying that despite coming from a political family, he has a strong desire to bring his people's issues to the attention of the world. He always wanted to help people, and as time passed, he became the voice of his people and a leader.
When he has free time, Salman enjoys listening to the music of Abida Parveen and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. He believes that going to a beautiful mountain with a book and listening to his favorite music is the best way to relax.
Salman encourages young people to set goals before anything else and live their lives with meaning. He believes that the youth should serve others rather than live solely for themselves.
Salman says he believes in humanity, and his life’s motto is to serve people. He says he worked during COVID for the people's benefit, providing them with everything from food to medical assistance.
