Salman Khan is a musician and has been practicing music for the past fourteen years.
Salman shares that he hails from a family of musicians. His grandfather was a renowned musician of his time and worked in All India Radio. His father was also a musician who regularly performed on Akashwani and did really well as a musician. It was his grandfather who saw potential in him and encouraged him to learn music, Salman says.
Salman feels that music is the culture of India and it's in our blood and we ought to endeavor to keep our love for music alive.
In 1984, Salman’s grandfather moved to Udaipur. And Salman was born, brought up, and went to school in Udaipur itself.
Talking about the formative years of his life, Salman says that he would be least interested in studying. His parents would constantly push him to focus on his studies. But he was more interested in arts and would participate in extra-curricular activities like painting and sketching at school with vigor.
After completing high school, Salman tried his hand at acting as he was not interested in studying further. He auditioned for different movies and also acted in a few web series. Later, he took to music full-time upon his grandfather’s advice. He started learning music from his grandfather. He learned to play the Sarangi, an Indian musical instrument. He also learned to play Tabla.
Salman considers his grandfather, who beat all the odds in his life and earned a name for himself as a musician, as his role model.
Talking about challenges in his life, Salman says that he had started playing Tabla at hotels and other functions but his grandfather’s death left him devastated. He had always performed alongside his grandfather and now all of a sudden finding a music partner came as a challenge to him. Besides, having a daughter when he was merely seventeen entailed its own set of challenges to fulfill his duties as the man of the house. However, his problems eased out when he organized a Sufi night for a royal wedding in Udaipur, he says.
