A fourth-generation musician from Malda, London based Sadakat Aman Khan is promoting Indian Classical Music and also trying to position the Harmonium as a solo instrument all over the world. As the grandson of the great Ustaad Mohammad Yunus Khan, he strives to spread love, unity and harmony.

Sadakat Aman Khan, currently based in London, is an Indian Classical Musician, Harmonium Soloist, Accompanist, Composer, and Author.

He represents Hindustani Classical Music, and his primary focus is to present the Harmonium as a solo instrument, both nationally and on various international platforms.

Khan shares that for him, music is not just a profession; it is his identity as well as his responsibility. Indian classical music, he believes, is one of the oldest and richest music traditions in the world.

He carries the harmonium as his main instrument. Traditionally, the harmonium has mostly been used as a supporting instrument, but he performs it as a lead solo instrument as well. He explains that the harmonium has often been used while singing bhajans, kirtans, and ghazals as an accompanying instrument, but he tries to present the harmonium as a solo instrument before the world. Through his performances, projects, and educational work, he aims to show the Indian classical music community and audiences that the harmonium has immense potential and can connect with modern audiences while still keeping its purity and depth alive.

When asked about his inspiration to join the field of music, Sadakat Aman Khan shares that he did not choose music; music chose him. He belongs to a family full of musicians and is a fourth-generation musician, with his forefathers being musicians as well. He also shares that his grandfather, Ustad Mohammad Yunus Khan Sahab, was a legendary figure in classical music, and so is his father, Ustad Sahadat Rana Khan. They are his idols, and he looks up to them every single day.

Being deeply rooted in music, as his family was full of musicians, music was not a choice for him, it was like oxygen, something he had to breathe. Music was everywhere around him; he saw it, felt it, and lived it, and he feels that he was born with music. He also shares that he saw his elders, including his grandfather, practicing for hours every day with full discipline and devotion. This inspired him very deeply. From a very young age, he understood that music is not just about money and fame, because Indian classical music requires devotion, as it is a form of spiritual music.

He believes that if one truly wants to run behind fame or money, they should not choose music, because Indian Classical Music is all about dedication and patience, and one has to surrender oneself completely to it.

Indian Classic Musician Sadakat Aman Khan was born and raised in Malda, West Bengal. Malda, he shares, is a small town approximately 350 kilometers from Kolkata.

His childhood memories are filled with early morning ‘riyaz’, with his father and grandfather sitting with him and teaching him. His mornings began with music practice. He recalls, when he woke up, he saw his father practicing, and when he went to sleep, he noticed his father was still doing riyaz. It was always present. Learning ragas at home and listening to great classical musicians, including his grandfather and other legendary artists, it seemed music was always around him. His first teachers were his father and grandfather, who trained him not only in music but also instilled good values and honesty in him.

Alongside music, he completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science and Engineering from KIIT University, Bhubaneswar. Later, he pursued his MBA from Coventry University, London. He mentions that education is equally important, as his father and grandfather always said that while music is essential, good education is a must because it positively affects one’s personality. Even if one wants to become a musician, they taught him to always remember that good education is very important in life.

He feels that this combination of art and education helps one understand both creativity and the professional world.

He shares that his biggest role model is his grandfather, the legendary Sangeetacharya Ustaad Mohammad Yunus Khan Sahab. He was not only a legendary musician but, more importantly, a great human being. He shares that he has never seen someone as great as him. According to him, his grandfather was an exceptional human being along with being a musician.

His grandfather taught him many lessons, including that music should come from the heart and should never create division in society. He was a person who did not believe in things like the caste system or societal divisions. Sadakat Khan followed his grandfather’s life very closely, and his teachings guide him every single day. Khan says his grandfather was an amazing musician, a very good teacher, and a great tutor, with many students all across the globe. He remains his role model, whom he looks up to every single day.

One song that motivates him deeply is “Brij Dham,” which was written and composed by his grandfather. He shares some lines of the song:

“तुम काहे बजाई श्याम मुरलिया मधुर मधुर बृजधाम।”

He shares that his grandfather took inspiration from Lord Krishna and Radha while writing this song, imagining their love story. What inspires him the most about this song is that his grandfather, coming from a deeply rooted Muslim family, wrote such a beautiful Hindu devotional bhajan, which is very rare to see today. For him, this song represents unity, respect, and harmony beyond religion.

He believes that every artist’s journey is filled with struggles, and his journey is no different. He feels that artists are born with struggles. When he moved to London, everything in India was going well, but in London, it was extremely challenging. He shares that building one’s identity in London is very difficult, as there are many talented musicians, and establishing a unique identity in the city takes time.

After moving there, he tried busking, as nobody knew him, and in a new country, one has to prove oneself every single day. He had to start from zero to build recognition, find platforms, and prove himself. This journey was always challenging. He expresses his gratitude to his brother like friend K. V. Joshi, who supported him immensely and introduced him to people who believed in his work. He has founded Harmonium Metal, wrote three books on music, and represents Indian classical music,especially the harmonium on the global stage.

For anyone entering this profession, he advises patience and discipline. Believing Indian classical music to be spiritual, he emphasizes that there are no shortcuts in it. It is not about learning “Sa Re Ga Ma” today and expecting instant mastery. Music takes time. One must have immense respect for their guru, practice daily, and stay honest to their art. Without honesty towards one’s art, success is not possible. At the same time, he advises newcomers to remain open to learning new things and to present Indian music confidently on global platforms.

Harmonium Soloist Sadakat Aman Khan shares that he loves his country and is a proud Indian. He practices Indian classical music, which he believes is the oldest form of music in the world. He feels that India’s greatest strength lies in its cultural diversity and values. He believes that if one stays connected to their roots and works with sincerity in any field they choose, the nation will continue to grow.

He shares that every Indian, whether in India or abroad, carries the responsibility of representing the country with dignity and pride. Wherever one goes and whatever one does, when people hear the word “Indian,” they should feel pride. He also recalls the words of his father and grandfather, who taught him that music has no religion, no borders, and no limits.
