Sachin Rai is a Wildlife Photographer and a Photography Teacher. He shares that his journey as a wildlife photographer started fifteen years ago when he started capturing nature and doing photography for pleasure during his travels.
Sachin was born and brought up in Mumbai but has been living in Bangalore for the past eleven years. He says that after his schooling, when the trend of computers had just arrived, he did a course in computers. It got him to land a job of online designing for the Femina Magazine and Filmfare Awards. Later, he also got a chance to work on many banking websites for banks like SBI, ICICI Prudential, etc.
Shortly after that, Sachin got a chance to go on an educational tour sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund Organization, where he got to know about different wild animals and birds. It drew his interest immensely and he eventually realized that this was his calling. Soon he purchased an expensive DSLR camera to pursue wildlife photography further. In 2007, he left the IT industry to form a photography company and academy in Mumbai and plunged headlong into wildlife photography. Before long, social media leveraged his business and it went on to go uphill.
Recalling his childhood, Sachin says that he was fascinated by wildlife since childhood, but he had never thought of becoming a wildlife photographer.
Talking about his role models, Sachin says he considers Kedar Gore and Anand Pendharkar as his role models for sharing his interest in wildlife. He also draws inspiration from Michael Nichols, a famous photographer for National Geographic magazine.
When asked about his achievements, Sachin says that back then, there were no social media platforms. In that case, the publication of his wildlife photography in Sanctuary Asia Magazine, the most popular of the only two wildlife magazines in that era with a large print run, was his biggest achievement. Later in 2007, he achieved an even bigger milestone by winning the ‘Sanctuary Asia Award’ for best wildlife photography.
Regarding his mistakes, Sachin says that he wasted a lot of money in the rush to advance in the field of photography, which he feels he should not have done. Second, he feels that he should have taken to photography much earlier, which he considers a mistake.
Besides photography, Sachin is an avid reader. He is also fond of meeting people, socializing and connecting to people from different streams of wildlife work, when free.
Sachin advises everyone that no matter what field you are in, you must find a hobby to keep your mind peaceful and busy at the same time. He also inspires us to be curious and seek information about our hobbies to keep going.
