Ruchi Singh Tanwar is HOD of the Department of Tourism and Hotel Management at Bhupal Nobles University, Udaipur.
Ruchi was born in a middle class Rajput family in Jodhpur. She was brought up in an atmosphere of education in her house. Her father was in the Police Department and was posted in Udaipur. Unfortunately, at the age of thirty-five, her father was martyred in a terrorist encounter in 1986 in Udaipur, while they all were living in Jodhpur with her mother for their studies. Later, her mother also joined the Police Department and took care of the family.
Ruchi did her schooling from St. Patrick’s Vidya Bhawan School, Jodhpur and B.A. from Kamla Nehru Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Jodhpur. She did her Masters in Tourism Administration. She cleared the ‘All India Approved Tourist Guide Exam’ during her post graduation and also did her PhD in 2010.
Ruchi says that she had always been a zestful student since childhood and was very active in extracurricular activities. She was also an NCC Cadet in school and college in which she represented Rajasthan. She did RDC Camps at the national level in junior as well as senior wings, as a best cadet. Having been influenced by NCC and being an athlete, she always wanted to become an Army Officer but things were not in her favor and she could not become one.
Ruchi shares with us that in 2007, B.N. University had approached her because they were getting tied-up with an International Polytechnic College in New Zealand and they needed someone from the Tourism background. She joined that job thinking that it will help in her personal growth simultaneously contributing to the growth of students and the industry as well. In 2012, she was invited by the CEO of the New Zealand college to experience their culture and promote their courses in BN’s academic curriculum called ‘International Studies.’
Ruchi is a member of the ‘Tourist Guide Federation of India’. In 2019, she worked closely with the Tourism Department of Uzbekistan as a ‘Social Media Coordinator’ of the TGFI for their international conference. She represented India at many other national and international Tourism events through webinars and was closely associated with the ‘Indian Institute of Travel and Tourism Management’ as a speaker. She is a Vice-President of the ‘Udaipur Tourist Guide Association’ and women’s wing of the ‘Mewar Kshatriya Mahasabha.’
During the Covid pandemic, Ruchi addressed tourism professionals of Uzbekistan through a webinar about how to deal with the problems afflicting the tourism industry in such crucial situations. Apart from that her husband’s international tourism business came to a complete standstill and his handicraft business also came to a stop . She says that domestic tourism was somewhat going on but due to the second wave, that too ended and people were forced to live in homes. However, she thinks that if people travel following all the protocols, then the travel industry will boom again.
Ruchi says that she has made her daughters so independent by educating them that they take all their decisions by themselves. This is an achievement for her. Other than this, she says that several parents and students remain in contact with her even after the completion of the course and the satisfaction of those people is a huge achievement for her.
So far as mistakes are concerned, Ruchi says that apart from her academic career, she has made some big mistakes in her life. She says that she has missed many good opportunities in her career and did not take things seriously and underestimated those opportunities back then, which she regrets today.
Ruchi advises those who want to come into this field to first analyze whether you can adjust in this industry because it is very dynamic and every event hits this industry. There is a lot of scope here but it has many ups and downs so you have to put a lot of effort into it to be successful. Apart from this, you should have strong communication skills and be good at managing relations.
Ruchi considers her maternal grandmother and her mother as role models as only because of them, she has become what she is today. She says that with their guidance she has become an extrovert, bold and expressive.
If Ruchi gets a chance to go back in time, she would like to go back to 2016 and take the offer to settle down in New Zealand with her family that she missed out on.
Ruchi cooks in her spare time and she likes to be active on social media. She keeps on learning something and so she did many certification courses online in her free time. She also loves traveling and exploring new places besides taking fitness goals and working on them. Apart from this, she has a passion for writing quotes and articles.
