Those who work hard, never lose.
Roma Bhardwaj is the Founder and Owner of ‘The Social Tapri’, a cafe at Sukhadia Circle, Udaipur. She says it has a social format where you can go, have tea and chat with your friends..
Along with this, Roma is also associated with a social NGO. Currently, she is working on a project with a US based NGO ‘Restoration Works International’ in the heart of Udaipur. Apart from this, she is also associated with an NGO for about ten years and runs a US interchange program in collaboration with a few other NGOs, where students come to Udaipur for their internship in the fields of education, health and microfinance.
Roma hails from Udaipur. She did B.Com and P.G. in HR. Then she got associated with NGOs and had her first placement in 2001 in Seva Mandir. She started her work with a Childline Program where they used to give free services to children through a toll free number. She has also done many women empowerment programs by providing Women’s short stay home services where women who face discriminations and domestic violence can come and stay there. They used to give emotional support to those women and develop some skills in them to become financially independent. She is also a member of Jan Lakshya Trust, in which she is working in a cancer program for women labourers. They also work with herbal medicinal treatments by opening preservation centers in villages to take the benefits of Ayurveda.
Roma says that Corona brought a very bad time for everyone. She says her cafe remained closed for a very long time and as a result she had to send some of her staff to their villages but she had to retain the local employees. She tried not to fire them all so she kept paying them salaries on time. Her clients were so good that they kept placing on call orders and kept ordering food items at home so her work went on.
Talking about hardships, Roma says that she got married at a very young age as she fell in love. She says it was only because of her mother’s coercion that she studied in life and was able to progress so far. So she advises the youngsters to never give up on studies no matter what you want to do in your life. You must stand on your own feet and try to become financially independent.
Roma considers her mother as her role model because she inspires her at every stage of life and at all times that she must do something progressive in life. Also, her husband is her role model for motivating her to move ahead and supporting her at every phase of life.
Roma believes that everyone is a born leader because everyone has leadership skills in themselves which they need to lift up and develop over time with experience. She believes in working with people in a team instead of leading them and giving directions to them.
Roma likes to spend time with her family, watch movies and loves to go on drives in her free time.
Roma suggests to the cafe owners that if you want your cafe to last long, then you have to maintain the quality to sustain in the market. Also, you have to get involved in your cafe because you can’t leave it to your staff to run it as you will lose a touch with your client that can become a hindrance in growing your business.
If given a chance to go back in time, Roma would like to go back to a US based internship program ‘Foundation for Sustainable Development’, where she spent a memorable time with students so she wants to live that time again.
