Rohit Jain is the founder of Banyan Roots, an organic products company in Udaipur. He is also the secretary of Organic Farming Association of India.

Rohit Jain lives in Udaipur. He did his B.Sc. from Udaipur and for his masters, he went to Pune. He says that during his masters he didn’t have any clarity as to why he was doing what he was doing. And to seek clarity he used to attend many conferences and conventions. He shares that one such convention named the Vivekananda Youth Convention which he attended gave him a reality check. This convention was addressed by various keynote speakers from different walks of life including late Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

Rohit says taking a cue from Dr. Kalam’s speech, he started searching and finding the purpose of his life. After his masters, he went to Ahmedabad and worked with NGOs in the field of education. Whilst working with an NGO he went to a slum and interacted with the kids there. He realized most of these slum dwellers had migrated from their villages where they used to do farming. He was left wondering why despite food, cloth and shelter being the three basic necessities of every human being, these people who were involved in farming without which food is impossible, were moving toward secondary sectors like construction and others which are not so important unless basic necessities are fulfilled.

Rohit, in pursuit of answers to these questions, went to a village with a thought that if he could educate people and children over there then they would not leave their village and take-up farming as their occupation.

Rohit shares that when he first went to the village and interacted with children over there he was awe-struck at how much these kids already knew which our modern education may fail to impart to the kids in cities. And during his interactions with the people of the village, the idea of creating a business model in the organic farming sector struck him. Hence he started his entrepreneurial journey.

Talking about hardships he faced during his entrepreneurial journey he recounts that the journey has been full of challenges and at times tested his patience. He says that storing the inventory of farm produce was a big challenge and once his entire inventory was attacked by bugs and it incurred a huge financial loss. But with the support of the people, he sustained the loss and moved ahead. And now his venture has hit break-even and he is experimenting with new ideas as to how he can scale up his business.

If given a chance to go back in time and undo something Rohit says he would want to do the same thing that he is doing now.

Talking about his free time, Rohit mentions he hardly has any but whenever he gets free time he likes to go trekking and hiking and spend time with nature.
