Rohini Choudhary is a Contemporary Realism Artist. She teaches art in her academy at the Padukone-Dravid Centre for Sports Excellence in Bengaluru and also teaches students across the world through the online medium. She creates large paintings sized eight to nine feet, and also works on commission.
Hailing from Nagpur and raised in a middle-class family, Rohini pursued engineering at Yeshwantrao Chavan College of Engineering, guided initially by familial expectations. Though a doctor, her mother was also a talented artist. Rohini inherited her artistic inclinations from her mother. She studied engineering because her mother wanted her to pursue academics, following the example of her elder sister.
Commencing her career as a lecturer at G. H. Raisoni College of Engineering, Nagpur, Rohini worked as a lecturer for three years before getting married and relocating to Bengaluru. She then transitioned into the IT sector, working in tandem with her husband. Later, she relocated to the United States with her husband and worked there in the department of embedded engineers at Nintendo for three years.
However, she always had an artist within her, and living in the US gave her the chance to learn and work on her artistic skills. She organised small exhibitions and did workshops with some fantastic artists. She also met Suchitra Bhosle, her mentor, from whom she learned a lot.
Upon returning to India due to family reasons, she was given the opportunity to take some time out and pursue her artistic endeavours. She met some artists and visited several exhibitions. Realising that she could make her own space in the field, she started exhibiting with the artists. Over the past five years, she has carved a niche for herself, specialising in portraiture. Her expansive eight- to nine-foot canvases, commissions, and her own academy stand testament to her artistic journey.
Rohini believes that art is all about freedom, where there are no rules and everyone can explore their own uniqueness. The first phase in learning is to practise still life, followed by landscape and portrait. Portraiture is the last step because it requires total precision in the painting's minor details, and no mistakes are accepted. She continues by mentioning different types of art, including modern, contemporary, and abstract art.
Reflecting on her role models, Rohini says she draws inspiration from Pramod Kolekar and fondly recalls workshops she did under him. Her mother's early influence, coupled with an eagerness to learn from diverse sources, contributed to her artistic growth.
Motivated by the lyrics of the song "Vacation," Rohini resonates with the idea that pursuing one's passion can make every day feel like a vacation. Her message to everyone is to take a step back and consider their interests, saying that doing so will help them succeed both professionally and personally.
Recounting her struggles, Rohini says that initially, coming into the art field, she felt a bit out of place as she lacked the necessary educational background. But with time, she began to receive compliments from the most experienced artists, giving her the confidence to carry on. Other than that, she didn't have any significant career obstacles to overcome.
Mentioning some of her achievements, Rohini says she has won 10–12 trophies nationally and internationally for her work. During the pandemic, she participated in and won a live online competition, where she made a portrait in one and a half hours. She has done several exhibitions. She was also honoured with an ‘Artist of The Year’ award for her charcoal work.
To budding artists, Rohini advises following their hearts, forging their own paths, and honing their craft to a level where they become impossible to ignore. Echoing Suchitra Bhosle's 10,000-hour rule, she underscores the importance of relentless practice as the key to achieving perfection in any endeavour.
