Rohan Ambike is a freelance journalist and certified graphologist. He has been into journalism for the past five years.
Rohan hails from Pune. He did a BSc in Electronics from Fergusson College, Pune.
Rohan shares that he had never planned to be a journalist. After completing a BSc in Electronics, he enrolled in masters. It was during his masters that he realized that he was interested in pursuing journalism. Since he had always liked writing and reading newspapers from childhood, he took to writing.
Talking about the formative years of his life, Rohan says that at school he would write for his school’s magazine, participate in elocution, skit reading, etc. Besides, he would love to read all sorts of news.
Further, he says that though he was a student of science, during his bachelors, he used to interact more with students of humanities and would also attend lectures for humanities. And it would give him a different perspective on things and it also furthered his interest in journalism. Later, he also enrolled himself in a Diploma in Journalism. And during the diploma, he got to interact with many eminent journalists and also worked with print media in Pune. He also interviewed different politicians, writers, etc. which gave him a bird’s eye view of things.
After having worked in Pune, Rohan moved to Mumbai to work as a journalist there. He says that Mumbai was his maternal place and he would often come to Mumbai in his childhood so moving to Mumbai was easy for him. He started working in a business-to-business publication there. He says that he learned a lot about journalism working in Mumbai. After having worked as a full-time print media journalist for about five years, he took to freelance journalism.
Rohan laments that besides poverty and illiteracy, people in the country are politically illiterate which is worrisome. He says that changes can’t happen overnight. It takes time to implement things on the ground and for things to show results.
To aspiring journalists, Rohan tells them that journalism is not as exciting as it seems on the face of it. It is a profession that certainly comes with a lot of challenges.
Talking about COVID, Rohan says that he had just joined a new job when the pandemic hit. He was on probation and worked from home itself for the initial three months. He feared whether he would be hired or not after completion of the probationary period as many of his acquaintances had lost their jobs. Besides, he says that he read a lot of books, watched a lot of documentaries, and interacted with many journalists during the pandemic.
Talking about his role models, Rohan says that instead of idolizing one person we should learn from everyone. From Sachin Tendulkar to Virat Kohli, he has had different role models over the course of his life journey.
In his spare time, Rohan likes to read, travel and do photography.
If he could go back in time via a Time Machine, Rohan would want to go back to his college days and would want to pursue his dreams of passing the UPSC Civil Service Examinations, joining NDA, etc.
His Life Mantra is that life is about struggles and that you should not back down in times of struggle.
To people his message is that life is not about living it to impress others else soon you will die. Besides, he says that if you love people then love them the way they are, without any ideological clashes.
