Richa began her Kathak journey at the very young age of three. Over the years, with her relentless efforts, she learned the nuances and intricacies of the classical dance form, and today as an exponent of it she is carrying forward the tradition of Kathak Katha Vachan.

Richa Jain is a Kathak exponent who has been pursuing the Kathak dance since the age of three. Besides, she is an impaneled artist with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations under the Ministry of External Affairs and an A-grade artist of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting of the GOI.

Recalling the formative years of her life, Richa says that she first began learning Kathak at the age of three. Both her parents were Kathak artists who believed that a combination of music, art, and dance makes a complete dancer. Therefore, besides Kathak, she also received her training in classical vocal music under her gurus. She was a confident kid growing up and always enjoyed being on the stage to perform. All in all, she says that she grew up in an atmosphere of music and dance and developed a penchant for dance and music naturally.

Richa shares that she is continuing the tradition of Kathak Katha Vachan which entails enacting mythological characters by singing and dancing simultaneously live on the stage. She aims to promote the tradition and aspires to continue doing so for as long as she can.

Richa advises people to set goals for themselves rather high. She says there certainly will be challenges in the pursuit of their goals but if they’re hard-working and loyal and honest to their goals then they will surely achieve them eventually.

Regarding her mistakes, Richa says that one’s mistakes give one an opportunity to learn, and therefore one should never fear committing mistakes. Besides, she says that one’s mistakes also shape one’s personality.

Richa thinks that pursuing classical arts gives us an identity and helps us distinguish ourselves from others.

When asked about her role models, Richa says that she considers her parents as her first and foremost role models and gurus. She emulates her parents and tries to imbibe their qualities in her. Besides, Pt. Ajit Kumar Mishra and Pt. A. Maheswar Rao who always supported and guided her in her Kathak journey are also her role models.

Richa is of the opinion that it’s essential to find the right guru to learn art in its truest form. And once you have found the right guru, you should surrender yourself wholly to the guru to learn the art.

To people, her message is to always follow their passion for keeping their souls alive irrespective of their commitments and professions.

To parents, Richa advises them that instead of forcing their children to pursue particular things they should give them an environment of freedom where they can explore themselves freely.

In her spare time, Richa likes to cook food and play with children.
