Despite a busy private job, Rekha could not resist doing theater and is following her passion for the art fully by co-founding a theater group.

Rekha Sisodia is a theater artist who performs on stage in live plays. She is the co-founder of Natyansh-a theater group in Udaipur. She has been doing theater for the past thirteen years.

Rekha was born and brought up in Udaipur and did her schooling from Udaipur itself from Kendriya Vidyalaya. Then she graduated from MG College and also did MBA in Marketing. After completing her education, she joined a job.

Rekha had her first tryst with theater when she did a play when she was in the 9th class in her school. She liked the art a lot and also did a theater-workshop organised by Rajasthan Patrika. She realised it was difficult to do both her job and theater, so she dropped her job.

Initially, her family was not supportive of her for doing theater. So, she went to rehearsals by telling a lie to her family. She even did plays by duping her family saying that she was going to her friend’s house for the night to study. Gradually, on seeing how passionate she was towards theater, they allowed her to do it on the condition that she would continue her studies and job too along with doing theater.

Rekha says initially, when she co-founded ‘Natyansh’ in 2013, finding an audience was a struggle for them. They started doing street plays at prominent places in the city. Sometimes, they had to face protests from radical groups when they did plays on sensitive subjects. But, gradually they started getting audience’s support which boosted their morale.

With an objective to popularise theater, they started workshops in schools. But, school principals did not alot them adequate time to train the students. Ultimately, one of the schools supported them, and they produced a good play after a three-months workshop. Now, parents of many youngsters are realising that participating in theater is better for their boys and girls instead of roaming around here and there aimlessly. It at least inculcates discipline and purpose in them and they become better humans.

Talking about Covid, Rekha says she made good use of the time by reading many books and plays by renowned writers. They also did an online play along with her friend’s group in Pune.

Rekha’s success mantra is to always be happy in life. She also says that you must only do what you like to do. Despite doing her job from ten to seven she finds time to practice theater in the morning and then till late in the evening.
