Ravi Punia is a professional writer, poet, and podcaster who is popularly known as the warrior poet. He also goes by the name Chand, a popular term used in most of his poems.
Ravi has been in the creative field of writing for over sixteen years now. He writes and recites in Hindi, English, Haryanvi, and Punjabi. Ravi is also a wine sommelier who studies and teaches everything about alcohol based on the knowledge he has. A wine sommelier briefs all about wine in between the seven classical French meals.
His career path initially started through management training in Mumbai's food and beverage sector, where he discovered his passion for wines and began his formal study in 2015. He has since worked in prestigious restaurants and hotels, guiding guests on food and wine pairings and collaborating with teams on menu selections.
He also runs a podcast show, "Wine, Life, and Poetry Conversations With Ravi Punia," which is an amalgamation of his hobby, passion, and profession. Ravi has many of his writings on Amazon, including "Ravi Se Chand Tak" in particular.
Ravi began his career as an industrial trainee before moving on to work as a butler at The Taj Mahal Palace and Raffles, Dubai.
Recalling his childhood, Ravi says he is a native of Haryana. His mother works as a nurse with the Government of Haryana, whereas his father served in the military. Ravi spent a good chunk of his childhood living in a village, which gave him time to spend with the people around him. He felt a lot of change and real learning after joining the Army Public School in Himachal Pradesh. In school, he learnt different things from different people.
Ravi reflects on his challenges, quoting Bruce Lee: "Do not pray for an easy life; pray for the strength to endure a difficult one." He recalls how his struggles, including a particular difficulty with maths, shaped his character. Despite his efforts to avoid the subject and ultimately failing in 10th grade—a significant stigma at the time—these experiences contributed to his personal growth.
However, he persevered and passed on his second attempt. This experience taught him an important lesson: never run away from your problems, as they will only grow bigger over time.
Another challenging episode of his life was when his father expressed his desire for Ravi to join the Indian Army. Since his paternal side had at least five generations of army men, he was expected to sign up for it. So Ravi attempted the CDS defence exam in 2013, but unfortunately, in the interview process, he got called out, which made him feel dejected. However, he thinks it was good that he missed out because he would have missed the life he is living now.
His mantra in life is that everything happens for a reason. As a member of the hospitality industry, he notes that the field has a visible and tangible aspect.
When reflecting on his pandemic experience, Ravi mentions that COVID-19 brought the hospitality industry to a standstill and halted his poetry stage shows, which had been running smoothly before the outbreak. He observes that many individuals who had promising careers faced a loss of hope due to the pandemic.
However, on the personal front, he got to spend some time with his family, from whom he had been away for almost sixteen years. Ravi also started running every day. As he gained weight, he started walking, running, and jogging. Ravi started running, which he has hated since childhood, and is proud to have run five marathons and an ultramarathon in the past year. He claims that in the last one and a half years, he has turned around 1700 KM. Running has become his addiction; a few days ago, he ran 32 kilometres as he completed 32 years of age.
Speaking about his role models, Ravi says he draws inspiration from his hard-working parents, who taught him how to be a better human being. Besides, he is inspired by Netaji Subash Chandra Bose, as he considers him the main hero of independence. He looks up to him as a perfect leader and always looks forward to being like him as a leader. Along with it, he also considers Swami Vivekananda for his calmness and peace.
Ravi draws inspiration from the music artist Eminem, who, despite coming from a modest background and being raised by a single mother, has become one of the top rappers in the industry. Ravi admires Eminem's journey and finds motivation in his ability to rise above challenges and achieve success through his own efforts.
In his spare time, Ravi enjoys listening to music, be it ghazal or hip-hop, and ends his day with it. He has the hobby of exploring a new musical genre every year. Ravi also has a creative side to him, where he enjoys creating artwork with stuff lying around in his house.
As a message to the youth, Ravi advises them to listen to their hearts and trust the calling of their souls. He encourages them to take action and avoid regretting inaction later in life. Ravi emphasizes the importance of being happy with what one has but never being fully satisfied, always striving for progress.
Ravi urges young people to make their own decisions and not let others dictate their choices. He encourages breaking the rules to follow their dreams while considering advice but maintaining control over their decisions to avoid future regrets. Additionally, Ravi emphasizes the importance of prioritizing mental, physical, and emotional health and dedicating time from busy schedules to pursue hobbies.
