Ravi Goutam is working as an Assistant Professor in the Civil Engineering Department at the Aravali Institute of Technical Studies, Udaipur. He has also worked at the Government Engineering College in Banswara.
Talking about his childhood, Ravi says that his grandfather was from Jaipur, but he settled in Udaipur for his job. Hence, he was born in Udaipur in a joint family. Ravi feels that being raised in a joint family has helped him a lot in creating a good connection with his cousins. He also feels that living in a joint family has some limitations but many benefits.
On the education front, he did his B. Tech. in Civil Engineering from Techno India NJR Institute of Technology and then his Masters from Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya, Gujarat. Currently, he is pursuing his Ph.D. from the University of Technology, Jaipur.
Talking about his achievements, Ravi says that he is twenty-seven and is going to complete his Ph.D. soon, which he considers an achievement.
When asked about his struggles, Ravi says that struggles are a part of life, like choosing the right stream after school, which was a tough decision for him. Also, he tried to get into an IIT but couldn't make it. Ravi says that he never let these things get in his way and always focused on his goal in life.
On being asked about his role models, Ravi says that his grandfather, Raghunandan Sharma, is his role model. He says that his grandfather made a name for himself in Udaipur even after starting his career from scratch. Ravi also feels that we should make someone close to us a role model, as that gives us the opportunity to get a twenty-four-hour learning experience, which we cannot get if we choose a celebrity as one.
Ravi further adds that when he started his journey, he had no intention of becoming a professor and wanted to work in the real world in the field of infrastructure development. However, he felt that the education field is experiencing a great lag in its connection to the practical field of the world, as only ten percent of what is taught in class is associated with practical work, especially in the civil engineering field, which he considers a field that is more connected to the real world. After working in the civil field with his father and completing his master's degree, he gained much practical knowledge and decided to impart the same through the teaching field.
Talking about his inspiration, Ravi says that Ratan Tata is his inspiration for the work he has done for our country. Ravi says that a quote from him inspires him a lot, and that is, ‘I don't believe in taking right decisions; I take decisions and make them right.’
If given a time machine to go back in time, Ravi says that there are some regrets he has, like wasting so much time on his mobile and computer and not investing that time in something useful. He says that he would like to go back in time and invest more time in learning something new or doing a course that would have helped him in the present. However, he also feels that all the rights and wrongs have shaped his life and are therefore an essential part of it.
When asked about the more important of the two, education or experience, Ravi says that both are like wheels on a bicycle and are equally important. He feels that education helps in learning manners, and experience motivates us to live our lives. Education provides us with the right platform, and experience helps us move forward in life.
Advising the youth, Ravi says that education and choosing a profession are two different things. One can always choose a profession based on their skills and hobbies and develop experience in that. He feels that no work is small or big in life and shares equal importance.
