Ranu Sharma serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at Pacific College of Pharmacy, Udaipur.
With a deep-rooted expertise in Medicinal Chemistry, she is dedicated to exploring the therapeutic potential of chemical compounds and guiding the next generation of pharmacy professionals through innovative teaching and research.
Associate Professor Ranu Sharma explains that Pharmaceutical Chemistry is broadly categorized into three key branches: Medicinal Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry.
Medicinal Chemistry delves deep into the molecular mechanisms of drug action, exploring how chemical compounds interact at the cellular level. Dr. Ranu Sharma explains that all synthesis processes in drug development are carried out through this branch of chemistry. She emphasizes its pivotal role in designing, synthesizing, and optimizing drug molecules to ensure they effectively target specific biological pathways.
Analytical Chemistry, on the other hand, is centered around the qualitative and quantitative analysis of various substances. It involves the use of advanced instruments like HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography), UV Spectroscopy, and GC (Gas Chromatography) to determine the strength, quality, and quantity of drug molecules—ensuring their safety and efficacy.
In 2014, Medicinal Chemistry Expert Ranu Sharma was selected from a pool of 51 candidates to conduct research at the Desert Medicine Research Centre (DMRC) in Jodhpur. As part of her project, she carried out extensive fieldwork, surveying 51 villages. Her dedication and impactful research earned her recognition and a felicitation by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), highlighting her commitment to community-focused scientific work.
After earning her BPharm and MPharm degrees, Ranu Sharma began her professional career at Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories in Hyderabad, where she worked in the Quality Control Department. Her role involved the qualitative and quantitative analysis of drug formulations. However, during her time in the industry, she noticed a significant gap between academic learning and real-world application.
She observed that students often lacked hands-on practical knowledge, which affected their performance in the pharmaceutical sector. This realization inspired her to shift her focus toward academia, where she could bridge this gap by equipping students with essential practical skills and industry-oriented knowledge.
Reflecting on her early years, Pharmacy Faculty Member Ranu Sharma shares that she hails from Kota, where she spent her childhood under the nurturing guidance of her grandparents. It was during this time that she imbibed the values of discipline and punctuality. She fondly recalls how her grandfather would wake up at 5 a.m. and take her along for morning walks—habits that left a lasting impression and helped shape her approach to life and work.
Regarding her role models, Professor Ranu Sharma shares that her grandfather has always been her greatest inspiration—a true embodiment of simple living and high thinking. As the principal of a government college, he led a life marked by humility and discipline.
“विनम्रता जीवन की सबसे बड़ी कुंजी है,” she reflects.
“No matter how high a position you hold, humility gives you strength and enhances your personality.” These values of simplicity and politeness, she says, were deeply instilled in her through his example.
She also deeply admires Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, not only for his achievements but for the way he lived—with humility, warmth, and a childlike heart. “He maintained strong relationships with everyone and remained grounded despite reaching the highest office in the country,” Ranu notes. “His love for children and his ever-polite nature are qualities she truly admires."
Ranu Sharma finds inspiration in Mahatma Gandhi’s timeless quote,
“Live and let live.”
She believes in creating a harmonious environment—whether at home or at work—by allowing others the freedom to grow, express, and thrive. Her message is simple yet powerful: live joyfully and give space to your family members and colleagues, fostering mutual respect and understanding in every relationship.
She advises students to focus on becoming good human beings first. She believes that qualities like discipline, punctuality, and politeness naturally follow when one has a strong moral foundation. “Even if a student is intelligent, without humility, discipline, or a positive attitude, success will be difficult to achieve,” she says. According to her, being a kind and grounded person lays the foundation for not only professional success but also for becoming an inspiration to others. “Once you become a good human being, everything else you aim for will follow.”
