Forced to plunge into business after her husband’s untimely death, Rama overcame all the odds to run the family business successfully.

Rama Malhotra is the proprietor of Udaipur Electric Works. She has been in this business for the last 42 years.

Rama was born in Amritsar in 1954. She completed her schooling in Chandigarh.

Rama shares that she got married at the early age of 17 in 1971. She has two daughters and a son. When Rama was just 26 years old, she faced tragedy when her husband left the family for his heavenly abode. Though her children were very young, she was forced to take up her husband's battery business and run it.

Talking about her challenges, Rama says that she encountered several challenges and obstacles in her journey. As she took up the business, the debtors refused to pay her, while the creditors started lining up and asking for their money. She requested that they all give her some time and promised to pay them all. Seeing her sincerity, they all cooperated and supported her. At that time, in 1980, it was really difficult for her to handle the drivers. But as time passed, she faced every trial with her commitment, persistence, and dedication and achieved success.

Describing her firm, Rama says that her firm is the distributor of Exide SF sonic batteries, Microtek inverters, Luminous inverters, and other automotive batteries in Udaipur. Initially, they used to assemble their own batteries, but as branded batteries became cheaper, they also started selling the branded ones. They are known for their quality products and timely delivery of services to their customers.

Talking about her achievements, Rama says she was honored by the Battery Association of Rajasthan, and the All India Automotive Association felicitated her in Jaipur. For her clean bank dealings, she has also been awarded the "Best Customer" award by PNB three times and also by Allahabad Bank and UCO Bank. She is of the opinion that one must always keep their financial dealings clean.

Rama shares that the biggest sacrifice she had to make in her life was when she decided to send all three of her children to boarding school in Mt. Abu because she had to devote all her time to her business. It was very difficult for her to remain away from her children, but she had no choice. She went to see them every weekend.

When asked about her role models, Rama says that she is influenced by the life of Dr. Kiran Bedi for her determination and grit. She looks up to her for her leadership skills.

To all the youngsters, Rama feels that there is a lack of patience in the new generation. They get overwhelmed by their responsibilities. She advises that it is very important to keep yourself calm and cool in business in order to satisfy your customers.
