Rakesh Sen is the owner of Kamal Studio. He hails from Udaipur.
Rakesh shares that his father established the studio 52 years ago, when not much was known about photography and the equipment and cameras were hard to get. Due to his father’s struggle, today it has become a family name in Udaipur, primarily in modeling, photography, fashion shows, TV serials, weddings, and many other occasions.
Recalling his childhood, Rakesh says that he did not take much interest in studies and used to play a lot with his friends. He remembers playing gilli-danda, cricket, and riding the rented bicycles. He has many fond memories of his childhood and recounts them with a smile on his face.
Rakesh shares his journey, saying that he completed his BCom and studied marketing. Thereafter, he worked in the marketing sector for some time. Eventually, he decided to join his family business. He started with various related services for the studio, like portfolio making for budding artists and actors who would be going to Mumbai, wedding makeup, and making short films at weddings. He says that there is a huge scope for photography in the modern era, and opportunities have increased manifold over the past decades with the development of technology.
Sharing about his mistakes, Rakesh says that back in those days, operating the camera was a hassle, and the roll needed to be changed again. He shares that once he forgot to insert the camera roll and was not able to match the client’s expectations. However, with the advent of digital cameras, things are much easier.
Rakesh shares that the current times have been a difficult phase of his life. His grandmother passed away, and he had to shift the shop’s location to an affordable one because he was not able to bear the rent. Unfortunately, his father also passed away in September 2020, and his mother was hospitalized. Nevertheless, he didn't lose hope and kept fighting against all the odds.
When asked about his role models, Rakesh mentions that his father instilled in him the value of hard work. Transforming a studio from zero into a household name in Udaipur was a journey fraught with challenges, yet his father managed to achieve success. Rakesh aspires to carry forward the legacy that his late father left behind.
If given a chance to go back in time, Rakesh would revisit his childhood, where he had a lot of fun and there were no worries or struggles.
In his spare time, Rakesh likes to travel. He enjoys wearing the latest fashionable clothing. He is a religious person and would visit Pichola Lake from time to time.
To all the budding aspirants, Rakesh advises that one can easily take a photography course and learn from their mobile phones. They can also do freelancing and earn money without investing in a studio.
