If you're genuine, people will respect and trust you.
Rachna Wadhwa Mallkani is a jewellery stylist and a designer who also runs a social media-driven jewellery company in addition to her work in the television industry. Under the name RWM Instyle, she owns a company where she does jewellery design and styling. She sells and rents jewellery for TV shows, events, and private celebrations. She says she had discovered wonder, beauty, and delight in all kinds of creativity ever since she was a kid. Her love of creativity has now grown into her ideal career as a custom jewellery designer and stylist.
Rachna was born in Kanpur and raised in Mumbai. She earned a bachelor's degree in commerce and a master's degree in ‘Early childhood care and education’. She started the journey as a teacher at Mumbai's Bombay Scottish School. Following that, she went to New York after her marriage, where she earned a double master's degree in ‘Early childhood care and education’. She was the Preschool Director there. Before pursuing jewellery design, she spent fifteen years working as a school teacher. She says that when she returned to India and wanted to work again, she joined her brother who owns a Television production firm as a jewellery stylist. Gradually, jewellery design has grown into a passion and profession for her.
Rachna recalls her childhood and tells us how she grew up in a joint family with her five siblings and relatives. Because she was the family's lone girl child, she was adored by all members and overprotected. She says her mother was very fond of wearing jewellery, and that is where she got her passion for jewellery.
When asked about her mistakes, Rachna responds by saying that she doesn't think that she has committed any particularly terrible mistakes, but she has learned a lot from her experiences in both her career as an educator and later as a jewellery stylist. However, she regrets not establishing a school of her own when she returned to India, believing that was a missed opportunity.
In response to a question regarding her achievements, Rachna says because she was raised in a joint family and lavished with care, relocating to New York after getting married and being utterly alone there was very difficult for her. She made the decision to pursue her education, get a career, and raise her children by herself away from her family. She sees this as an achievement in her life because she thinks she handled her life at that time so effectively. Furthermore, she also views her firm as a further accomplishment in life, allowing her to establish herself as a jewellery stylist and gain the trust of her customers.
Sharing her experience of the pandemic, Rachna says the horrifying months of this pandemic taught us a lesson to be grateful to our nature. She believes that if we wake up healthy, and have a job and a family, then we must show our gratitude.
According to Rachna, she has two role models and sources of inspiration in her life; one is her former immediate boss, who also happens to be her best friend and soulmate, and the other is the owner of four schools under whom she served as a Preschool Director in the USA, who has taught her the value of being grateful, perseverance, and fighting the good fight.
In her free time, Rachna enjoys spending time with her family and friends, going out, reading, and creating something new. Rachna says that she wishes to be regarded as a person who was passionate about her work as a jewellery stylist and educator.
Rachna suggests newcomers who want to get into the industry put all their hearts and souls into their profession. She says one has to be genuine with creativity, passionate and honest towards the clients, to be successful in this line of business.
