Prof. (Dr.) Kulvinder Kaur is an Entrepreneur, Educationist and Sahaja Yoga enthusiast in Udaipur.
Currently, Dr. Kulvinder Kaur is pursuing her entrepreneurial journey in Udaipur, where she owns and operates two stores under franchise from the popular garments chain ‘Momatos.’
Prof. (Dr.) Kaur describes that her stores specialize in ethnic wear, catering to distinct needs. One store, located in Sardarpura, deals in family wear with a unique concept of offering matching outfits for the father, mother, and child. The second store, situated near Town Hall, focuses on ethnic wear for women.
The hallmark of Momatos lies in its unique selling proposition (USP): providing a one-stop shopping experience for families. Customers can find dresses for every member of the family under one roof, eliminating the need to visit multiple stores.
The designs and collections at Momatos are curated from Ahmedabad and Mumbai, ensuring they remain distinctive and appealing. Dr. Kaur emphasizes quality as a top priority, particularly for their kids wear range, which is a core segment of their business. This attention to detail and customer-centric approach has established Momatos as a trusted name in the ethnic wear market in Udaipur.
Another key USP of Prof. Kulvinder Kaur's business lies in adapting to the changing mindset of customers. Dr. Kaur points out that, with rising incomes, people increasingly prefer shopping from showrooms for a more premium and personalized experience.
At her showrooms, Prof. Kaur ensures that every customer is treated with utmost respect and care. Her team focuses on providing excellent service and offers unique products that cater to the evolving preferences of their customers. This combination of exceptional customer interaction and distinctive offerings makes shopping at Momatos an enjoyable and memorable experience, fostering loyalty and trust among customers.
Dr. Kaur established her first store at Sardarpura in January 2024. At the time, she was uncertain about how customers would respond. However, by God’s grace, the store received an overwhelmingly positive response. Customers appreciated the unique designs and quality of the dresses, which boosted her confidence and motivated her to expand further.
Encouraged by this success, she opened her second store in July 2024 at Town Hall. The primary objective of opening a store at this location was to ensure the store was situated within a bustling market, making it more accessible and convenient for the public. This strategic move not only increased visibility but also enhanced customer reach, solidifying Momatos as a go-to destination for ethnic wear in Udaipur.
Prof. (Dr.) Kulvinder Kaur has also been an educationist for the last 25 years. In her teaching career, Dr. Kulvinder has published 20 research papers in various journals, including Unnati and other UGC-recognized journals. Each of her research papers introduces new concepts and learning that contributes to society. Some of the key areas she has focused on in her research include Relationship Management, Green Marketing, and Paperless Banking. These papers have been published in different journals, reflecting her dedication to contributing valuable insights to the field.
In terms of achievements, Dr. Kulvinder shares that she received recognition in 2023 from the Collector of Udaipur for her contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. During that time, she and her team worked tirelessly to prepare food packets for those in need. They made 60 to 80 food packets per day, and for 40 days, they distributed those meals to the underprivileged. This dedicated service earned her recognition at the ‘Salami 3’ event, which was a proud moment for her. The recognition further motivated Dr. Kulvinder and she continued her social work, inspired to do even more for those in need.
Reflecting on her life journey, Prof. Kaur shares that her career began with teaching higher secondary students, focusing on subjects like Accounts and Economics. For 15 years, she dedicated herself to nurturing young minds at the school level.
However, as time went on, she felt a desire to take on new challenges and transitioned to teaching college students. Over the past decade, she has been imparting knowledge to MBA students in subjects like Financial Management and Entrepreneurship.
Teaching college students, she notes, comes with its own set of challenges, significantly different from teaching school students. College education demands a greater emphasis on practical exposure, as students are prepared for real-world scenarios. To meet this requirement, Prof. (Dr.) Kaur has consistently made efforts to stay updated with the latest developments in corporate culture and workplace dynamics, ensuring her teaching remains relevant and impactful.
This dedication to blending academic rigor with practical insights has defined Dr. Kaur’s teaching philosophy, and continues to inspire her journey as an educator.
Reflecting on her transition from education to entrepreneurship, she shares how the skills she once taught her students are now being implemented in her own business endeavors. The challenges she used to discuss with her students as potential hurdles in the entrepreneurial world have now become her reality. Dr. Kaur actively navigates these challenges, leveraging her knowledge and experience to overcome them and strives to face each one of them with determination and resilience.
This phase of her career has allowed her to apply theoretical concepts in a practical setting, bridging the gap between academia and real-world business, and reinforcing her belief in the importance of hands-on experience.
Dr. Kaur admits that when she ventured into the business world, she initially had limited knowledge about the retail industry. However, as she progressed and gained hands-on experience, she came to understand the immense potential of this sector.
She discovered that the retail industry in India is valued at an impressive ₹85,000 crore and holds significant opportunities for growth and innovation. This realization further motivated her to deepen her understanding and refine her strategies, allowing her to carve a niche for her stores in this competitive market. Dr. Kaur's journey exemplifies how learning and adapting are key to succeeding in any field.
Talking about her inspiration behind joining the business field, Prof. Kulvinder Kaur shares that her journey began while teaching entrepreneurship to college students. She realized early that theoretical knowledge alone would not suffice; practical insights were equally essential to help her students understand the real-world dynamics of entrepreneurship.
To bridge this gap, Dr. Kaur started studying various start-ups in depth. She analyzed their challenges, strategies, and growth journeys, using this knowledge to enrich her teaching. Over time, this process sparked her personal interest in the field of entrepreneurship.
She soon realized that entrepreneurship offered immense potential—not only for earning but also for continuous learning and growth. While the journey is fraught with challenges, she found it equally rewarding and transformative. Driven by this realization, Prof. Kaur made the conscious decision to transition from being an educationist to becoming a businesswoman, upgrading her skills and embracing a new path filled with opportunities.
Prof. (Dr.) Kulvinder Kaur has also been a practitioner and promoter of Sahaja Yoga for a long time. She shares that her journey in Sahaja Yoga began during a challenging phase in her life. As someone who faced separation from her husband at an early age, she experienced a prolonged period of depression. This personal struggle opened her eyes to the psychological challenges faced by others, especially the youth, who often find themselves mentally stressed and vulnerable to depression.
To heal herself, Dr. Kaur adopted Sahaja Yoga, a unique meditation technique that awakens inner powers and promotes mental relaxation and physical well-being. She first worked on improving her own mental and physical health through this practice, which gave her the strength to rebuild her life, pursue her education, establish her career, and eventually become a successful businesswoman.
Inspired by her own transformation, Dr. Kaur decided to promote Sahaja Yoga, particularly among young people who she feels need it the most. Over the past 20 years, she has practiced and promoted this meditation technique, which she describes as going deep into the roots of one's being. Sahaja Yoga is based on the principle that illnesses or emotional distress stem from a depletion of energy in specific ‘chakras’, and this practice helps reenergize and balance those chakras.
She emphasizes the profound benefits of Sahaja Yoga, and claims that there have been cases where even fourth-stage cancer patients have found relief through its practice. Prof. Kaur sees it as her mission to guide others, especially the youth, toward this powerful meditation practice, helping them achieve mental resilience, emotional balance, and physical health.
Dr. Kaur describes that Sahaja Yoga meditation is practiced in 185 countries. In India, it has centers in every state, including one in Bhupalpura where it is taught every week. At these centers, sessions are conducted to introduce and guide participants about the meditation practice. Prof. (Dr.) Kulvinder Kaur explains that after holding their own sessions, they actively reach out to government and private schools, colleges, and other institutions to conduct one- or two-hour sessions for students. These efforts also extend beyond Udaipur, where they visit schools and colleges in nearby regions to promote the practice.
Her primary focus is on schools and colleges, as Dr. Kaur strongly believes that today’s youth need Sahaja Yoga meditation the most. She emphasizes that spiritual growth serves as the foundation for professional and financial growth. According to her, when individuals grow spiritually, their outlook changes, and their ability to handle challenges improves. This not only leads to professional and financial success but also ensures they pursue ethical and meaningful paths in life.
Dr. Kaur also points out that many young people, when faced with a lack of professional or financial progress, tend to resort to malpractices or shortcuts. By cultivating spiritual strength through Sahaja Yoga, they are more likely to remain on the right path, making balanced and well-informed decisions that positively impact their lives. Through these sessions, she hopes to guide the younger generation toward a more fulfilling, ethical, and successful life.
Recalling her early years, Prof. Kulvinder Kaur shares that she hails from Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, where she completed her entire education. After getting married at the age of 21, her life took an unexpected turn when she had to separate from her husband just a year later. During that difficult period, Dr. Kaur received immense support from her parents, who encouraged her to continue her education despite the challenges.
With her parents' backing, Dr. Kaur completed her double master degrees, did a B.Ed. and went on to earn a Doctorate from Kanpur University. Alongside her studies, she was also teaching, driven by a constant desire to improve herself and achieve more in life. Her passion for knowledge and growth propelled her to pursue further studies, and over time, she had the opportunity to teach Ph.D. students. Under her guidance, 10 to 12 students successfully completed their doctorate degrees in various fields, a testament to her dedication to education and mentoring.
Dr. Kaur's journey reflects her resilience and commitment to personal and professional growth, despite the challenges she faced at a young age. Her educational accomplishments and her impact on her students’ careers continue to inspire those around her.
Prof. (Dr.) Kulvinder Kaur shares that she was a very shy and average student in her childhood, and she didn’t have many friends. She emphasizes that exam marks are not the most important thing in life; what truly matters is determination and dedication to do something meaningful. Despite being a below-average student, Dr. Kaur was determined to improve and succeed. Her perseverance led her to complete her intermediate education from one of the best schools in Kanpur, marking a significant turning point in her journey.
Over time, Dr. Kaur underwent a transformation. She realized that if she continued to be an introvert and shy, she wouldn’t be able to move forward in life. So, she decided to make changes within herself. She started engaging with people, interacting more, and building friendships. This shift in her mindset was crucial, as she understood that personal growth required stepping out of her comfort zone.
Today, as a successful businesswoman, Dr. Kaur understands that customer satisfaction is the key to success. She realized that her earlier shy and introverted behavior wouldn’t serve her well in the business world. As a result, she worked hard to overcome her limitations, transforming herself yet again to become the confident and communicative leader she is today. Her journey serves as a powerful reminder that personal growth and success comes from the determination to change and improve.
Talking about her role models, Prof. Kulvinder Kaur shares that her role models are Dr. Manmohan Singh and Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. She admires them deeply for their humility and approach to success. Dr. Kaur believes that for many people, success itself is not difficult to achieve. However, the real challenge lies in remaining grounded after reaching that success. Often, after getting success, people begin to see themselves as different from others and develop an ego.
In contrast, Dr. Manmohan Singh and Dr. Kalam were individuals who, despite their remarkable achievements, continued to treat each day as an opportunity for learning. They remained humble and down-to-earth, showing that true success is not about personal pride but about staying committed to growth, both professionally and personally. Dr. Kaur draws inspiration from their values and strives to follow their example in her own journey.
She shares that the song "Chal Akela Chal Akela" has always been a significant source of inspiration for her. This song was her daily motivator, helping her stay focused and determined. She strongly believes that self-motivation is essential for achieving success in life.
When asked about her struggles, Dr. Kaur recalls a time when she was going through a very tough and challenging phase. During that time, she needed to gather the strength to move forward on her own. Listening to this song reminded her that even if no one was there to support her, she had to walk alone and keep moving forward. The message of resilience and independence in the song served as a powerful motivator to her, helping her push through difficult times and continue progressing in her journey.
Prof. Kulvinder advises the younger generation to overcome their fear of taking risks, as there is tremendous potential in every industry, including the booming fashion industry. She encourages youngsters to be fearless and confident, and to shift from being job-seekers to becoming entrepreneurs, launching new startups and developing their entrepreneurship skills. According to her, the first essential skill for a new startup is strong communication skills, enabling entrepreneurs to clearly express themselves in any language.
She believes that no one can stop you from becoming an entrepreneur if your communication is effective. Additionally, she emphasizes the importance of risk-taking ability. Before taking risks, it's crucial to do proper homework, to observe the market around you, and seize immediate opportunities. Dr. Kulvinder also stresses the need for young entrepreneurs to be tech-savvy and possess basic computer knowledge. The more you understand the system, the easier it will be to handle operations efficiently.
Prof. (Dr.) Kulvinder shares a powerful message, emphasizing that life is meant to be enjoyed, but many people fail to experience true enjoyment. Despite having many blessings, we often struggle to enjoy them because we let fear take over. She believes that the key to true enjoyment lies in knowing how to embrace life fully and that it’s only possible when we focus on both our spiritual growth and professional or financial success. She shares that through Sahaja Yoga, she learned how to minimize her struggles and live life to the fullest.
She also advises women to never lose hope in the face of difficulties. She believes that women possess an incredible strength to face challenges, and by being strong, they can also empower their families. She encourages women to never be afraid or discouraged, as one day, a new dawn will arrive, and their strength will lead them through.
