An Agriculture Botanist, Prof. Sunil Dutta Upadhyaya is Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at Medi-Caps University in Indore. He is also the Dean of Collaboration. He is a retired Director of Instruction from the Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Jabalpur.
Speaking of Medi-Caps University, Prof. Upadhyaya says that providing quality education is the main motto of the university. He emphasizes that high-quality education guarantees food and nutrition security, especially in the agricultural sector. The university is driven by their mission to help agriculture students grow into job providers, not job seekers. Dr. Sunil highlights that educated graduates in agriculture are not only required in India but also in foreign soil.
Medi-Caps University offers a four-year B.Sc Honors course in Agriculture, and in that course, 12 different subjects are taught to students, mainly Agronomy, Planet Science, Horticulture, Plant Diseases and Economics, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Physiology, and many more. In this course, the first year primarily focuses on the fundamental agricultural concepts. The second year covers the four principles of agriculture, the third year is for systems, and the fourth year is dedicated to entrepreneurship and skill development, using simple language to foster creativity.
Medi-Caps University's knowledgeable and helpful staff are adequately educated for guiding students. The institution offers an extensive range of facilities and resources for students who wish to pursue a promising career in agriculture, with a focus on education and practical expertise.
Dr. Upadhyaya was born in Khedi village, Khargone district, in 1954. He did his elementary education from a small school and completed his graduation from a college in the Barwani district. He pursued his postgraduate studies at Vikram University, Ujjain, focusing on Botany with a specialization in Ecology. In 1980, he joined Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwavidyalaya as an Assistant Professor.
Prof. Upadhyaya did his post doctorate in Forestry from the University of Florida under the USAT Fellowship Programme. He joined Medi-Caps University in 2020 driven by his passion for Botany and his 40 years of experience in education and research.
After coming back from the University of Florida, Dr. Sunil started promoting Forestry education, including B.Sc in Forestry, M.Sc in Forestry, and Ph.D in Forestry courses, and started promoting research in Forestry. Prof. Sunil urges his students to concentrate on Agroforestry and climate change projects because he is concerned about the negative implications of climate change. He went to Australia to learn more about agroforestry and the concept of deliberate integration of trees. After returning back to India, he started working as a scientist in the field of agriculture, leveraging his knowledge and experience to contribute to the sustainable development and increasing productivity of agriculture.
Realizing how vital it is to protect forests, Prof. Sunil concentrated on agroforestry with the goal of educating people about the benefits that come from combining forestry and agriculture. His dedication to environmental conservation is demonstrated by his specialization in Agroforestry and Medicinal Plants.
Prof. Sunil Dutta inherited his father's qualities of sincerity and honesty, and he looks up to his father as a role model. He highlights the need for time management in attaining success and always follows the proverb: Work is Worship.
He says he was raised next to the holy Narmada River and has respected it ever since. As the head of the Narmadiya Brahmin Society, he supports the community and organizes unique Narmada Jayanti celebrations. His actions and life are shaped by his profound reverence towards the river.
Talking about his life's struggles and achievements, Prof. Sunil shares that he belonged to a modest background and didn't face significant struggles but felt the financial constraints due to limited resources. However, his passion for education drove him to excel. He earned merit recognition at Vikram University and received scholarships and fellowships, including ones from the UGC, CSR, Australia, and US governments. He attributes his success to hard work. Retiring as the Director of Instruction at Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwavidyalaya fills him with immense pride. Even after retirement, he continues to serve in education, prioritizing institutions that value learning.
Attracting talented youth towards agriculture is the goal of his life. He believes that even in the age of technology and business, agriculture is the field with a bright future. He wants to tell the schoolchildren about higher education because the higher education ratio is barely 26% at grassroot levels. Because there aren't enough job providers in agriculture, there isn't a large demand for highly educated individuals. He thinks it can be changed by training them to close the social gap. He consistently encourages 12th graders to pursue careers in agriculture as a way to better society and themselves.
In his message to the youth, he asks them to practice time management skills in order to succeed in their chosen professions. Whichever field a person works in, they ought to respect and support that field. Own your work in order to succeed, and get ahead in life. It doesn't matter how big or small the task or position is; whatever responsibility is given to someone, they must take ownership of it.
