Don’t just work to get a degree; always strive to get the knowledge.
Don’t just work to get a degree; always strive to get the knowledge.
Prof. Sanket Joshi is a Deputy Director and Professor at Amity Institute of Microbial Technology, Amity University, Rajasthan, in Jaipur.
He states that he worked in academia for fourteen years in Oman prior to joining Amity University. Before moving to Oman in 2009, he worked for pharmaceutical businesses, Alembic Ltd. in Gujarat, and Sterling Biotech, where he developed many anti-diabetic medications and anti-cancerous compounds. He acquired expertise in both academic and industrial research.
His background mostly consists of research and development as well as the creation of novel chemicals, such as bio-base molecules, for various applied microbiology applications.
The three degrees in microbiology offered by the Amity Institute of Microbial Technology are bachelor's, master's, and doctoral, with an emphasis on industrial microbiology applications. One of the earliest private institutions in Rajasthan to focus on promoting research is AIMT. Funding for the core focus, industrial microbiology, comes from the Indian government's DST-FIST and DST-PURSE schemes. It also includes a whole lab where all the students receive training to work on the research as well as bring it to market.
The majority of the work that students do is on various bioproducts and prototypes. They are providing both up-stream and downstream capabilities, as well as assisting the students build or scale up for these sorts of bioproducts, with the aid of the DST lab. The main selling point of AIMT is that it provides students with real-world expertise in addition to academic information. Because they have industry collaborators who help them build and optimise their curriculum and provide real-world experiences in their businesses, students are also visiting and studying in different industries.
According to Prof. Sanket, he had no desire to work as a microbiologist. He had previously aspired to be a fighter pilot and serve his country, but he was unable to pass the medical exam due to an eye problem. Later, after his father encouraged him to pursue biology further, he chose to major in biotechnology because the field was expanding in 1999, the year he graduated from high school.
Having successfully completed his master's and bachelor's degrees, he was fortunate enough to be invited for the campus interview. During his four and a half years in the company, he learned a great deal about planning, carrying out the various microbiological goods, and using them. He had the good fortune to be exposed to a variety of subjects after entering the company, including engineering, biology, and analytical fields.
After gaining four and a half years of industrial experience, he returned to academia. His experience in industry is benefiting him in a variety of ways, including decision-making, laboratory research, developing new perspectives, and using the knowledge in real-world scenarios. He makes an effort to provide every student at AIMT with an encounter with the working world.
Prof. Sanket was born in a Jamnagar village. He joined a dormitory at a very young age and studied in the local language at first since he had always desired to be a fighter pilot. He says that the experiences also imparted valuable life lessons, such as how to overcome various obstacles, form friendships, and collaborate with individuals of all ethnic backgrounds. He came to Vallabh Vidhya Nagar, Anand, for his bachelor's and master's degrees after graduating. Following that, he started his first employment at Alembic Ltd., where he was primarily responsible for developing various antimicrobial agents, penicillin, antibiotics, and anti-cancer medications.
Following his work in the industry, he was awarded a fellowship by the ONGC Institute of Reservoir Studies. There, he studied various petroleum engineering techniques and attended the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda to complete his PhD. After earning his PhD, he returned to academia for a two-year period. He moved to Oman in 2009 because he had the chance to establish a state-of-the-art lab there and joined the department of petroleum and chemical engineering. He set up a laboratory there, where he handled several industrial projects and remained until 2023. He enrolled in AIMT in 2023 at Amity University, Rajasthan.
Regarding his role models, Prof. Sanket states that his instructors have been the major source of inspiration for him during the course of his life. In addition, women are very important to him, and his mother, mother-in-law, and wife all served as sources of inspiration. Because they have always greatly driven and inspired him, he views the women in his family as his role models.
"Dream big, plan well, work hard, believe in yourself, keep on smiling, and everything will fall into place" is a saying that really motivates him. This quote, which he attempts to live by, is incredibly beneficial to him. He gives everyone the same advice as well.
According to Prof. Sanket, obstacles are a part of life that shape who we are today. Therefore, it's critical to not worry about obstacles in life.
Regarding accomplishments, he claims that while working in industries, he was fortunate enough to create a great deal of excellent products. He was able to bring in a significant amount of funds while employed in Oman, where he also established a state-of-the-art research lab and service lab. While employed in Oman, he was recognised in 2020 by the Microbiologists Society of India as an NRI senior microbiologist. He was included in the list of the most-mentioned individuals in the field of research in 2022 and 2023.
He thinks that while success might be a goal in life, it is not the end. He counsels pupils not to be afraid of hard work since nothing worthwhile comes easily and there is no substitute for it. He thinks that things that come readily will also be lost easily. You have to give up certain things in order to obtain knowledge. Always strive to learn more than merely work towards a degree; while degrees are shared by many, the information you possess is uniquely yours. Never be afraid to push yourself outside your comfort zone, and don't restrict yourself to your area of interest. Individuals who are willing to take on new challenges, are open to learning new languages, and have strong skill sets will be the ones in the future. always seeks to acquire soft skills and get industry experience.
