Prof. (Dr.) Sunil Mishra is a Professor at the Institute of Management Studies, SAGE University, Indore. He has over 21 years of experience in teaching and management, having served in various roles, including Head of Department, Assistant Professor, and Professor. He also serves as the NAAC Coordinator, responsible for auditing departmental files in line with the criteria set by NAAC.
As the Coordinator for MOUs, Prof. Mishra also oversees international collaborations, including a recent tie-up with the Schiller International University- Tampa Campus in Florida, USA. Through this partnership, MBA students will complete their first year at SAGE University, transition to the Tampa campus of Schiller University for their second year, and then have the opportunity to work there for three years.
Prof. Mishra explains that the dual degree program offers students significant advantages, including international exposure and the opportunity to earn two degrees—one from SAGE University and another from the Schiller University- Tampa Campus. He highlights that this program equips students with the necessary competencies and skills to excel in multinational corporations with a good salary package and perks. Moreover, students receive a job visa permit, enabling them to work abroad for three years. If they choose to stay beyond this period, they may also become eligible for American citizenship. Prof. Sunil also discusses how, with this tie-up, SAGE University will benefit from its students contributing to the creation of a brand value abroad.
Talking about his achievements, Prof. Sunil Mishra shares that he has 50 research publications to his name, including 13 Scopus-indexed articles, five in the pipeline, 15 in UGC-CARE-listed journals, and the rest in refereed journals. Additionally, he has authored 6 books, including 3 edited volumes. Prof. Sunil is also actively involved with several professional bodies, serving as Associate Editor and Editor for multiple journals and is also associate member of several societies.
Prof. Mishra says his accomplishments would not have been possible without facing a fair share of challenges. He shares one such experience from his time of working at M.H. Gardi School of Management in Rajkot, where he served as Assistant Director. He suddenly received a call from home informing him about his father suffering from brain hemorrhage, which required him to rush back to Udaipur to look after him.
During that difficult time, Prof. Mishra had to balance both professional and personal responsibilities. The Chairman of the institute, Mr. Prashant, supported him by allowing him to work 15 days in the organization and spend the remaining 15 days with his father. As a result, Prof. Mishra managed to divide his time, spending 15 days in Udaipur and the other 15 days in Rajkot. His father was hospitalized for three months, and although the arrangement was challenging, Prof. Mishra was able to manage his duties.
However, after three months, it became clear that the arrangement of switching locations wasn't working well for him. Prof. Mishra made the decision to permanently move back to Udaipur, where he was selected for the position of Principal at Advent College. Unfortunately, his father passed away within just 15 days of his coming back to Udaipur. This was an incredibly difficult time for him, as he was managing both his personal grief and his professional responsibilities.
Reflecting on his early days, Prof. Sunil Mishra shares that he was born and brought up in Kharagpur, West Bengal. He completed his schooling at Kendriya Vidyalaya, IIT Kharagpur campus, followed by a Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from BIT-Khulna which he completed in 2000. Thereafter, Prof. Sunil was admitted to an MBA program (HRM and Marketing) at the Institute of Engineering and Management, Kolkata.
After completing his MBA, he worked at Vardhman University for two years. In 2005, Prof. Sunil enrolled as a full-time scholar in a PhD program at IIT Kharagpur under the guidance of Prof. Kailash B.L. Srivastava, in the Humanities and Social Science department, focusing on Manager Competency Mapping.
After completing his PhD, Prof. Sunil worked as an Assistant Professor in the MBA department at Jhunjhunwala Business School in Faizabad. He then moved to Rajkot, Gujarat, where he worked at Atmiya University in Rajkot and later at Gardi Vidyapith as Assistant Director for two years. Later, he had to move back to his hometown Udaipur, due to his father’s ill health, and worked at Advent Institute of Science & Technology for two years.
After that, to further his career and to provide exposure to his children, Prof. Mishra relocated to Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, and worked at Oriental University for three years. He then moved to Indore, where he worked at Medi-Caps University for seven years. Afterward, he joined SAGE University, where he has been working for the past six months.
When asked about his role models, Prof. Sunil Mishra says he has always drawn inspiration from his father, a former professor at IIT Kharagpur. Growing up watching his father’s devotion to the organization and his hardworking nature, Prof. Mishra learned the value of hard work in achieving success. In addition to serving at IIT Kharagpur, his father worked as a consultant for DRDO, ISRO, and the Railways, particularly in the Research & Development department. Prof. Sunil continues to look up to his father’s life, who had also traveled internationally.
Besides, the story of mountaineer Arunima Sinha also inspires Prof. Sunil. He draws motivation from her journey as the first female Indian amputee to scale Mount Everest. Her commitment and passion never extinguished her ambition to reach the summit.
Prof. Sunil mentions a Bengali song, "Ekla Chalo Re," which he finds inspiring. The song's message resonates with him: "You have come alone, and you will leave alone; only the good things will remain behind."
In his message to students, Prof. Sunil Mishra emphasizes that SAGE University provides an ideal learning environment supported by experienced faculty. The university offers excellent research facilities, with a well-equipped library featuring journals, magazines, articles, and books by renowned authors. He highlights the teaching pedagogy at SAGE, which is based on case studies. The internship program, known as OJT (On-the-Job Training), provides job-based learning during the summer term. Prof. Sunil adds that students at SAGE benefit from a rich academic environment, strong infrastructure, and full support and cooperation from faculty members.
To conclude, Prof. Sunil Mishra advises everyone to be a changemaker while staying true to their values—especially those rooted in Indian tradition and culture, as they provide the foundation for growth and success in life.
