Professor Ashok Soni is an Economics faculty member at Meera Girls College, Udaipur. He has been teaching at government institutions for the previous 26 years and has been with this college for the last ten years. He is also In-Charge of the Placement Cell of the college and also oversees the activities of other committees of the college.
Talking about the Economics Department, Prof. Soni states that he teaches undergraduate and postgraduate students there. The department provides postgraduate studies in two subjects: Labour Economics and Agricultural Economics. He declares with pride that many Meera Girls College students have been able to acquire positions as Assistant Professors after passing the NET examinations, as well as Statistical Officers and Statistical Assistants. Additionally, some girls are assigned to Banking and other sectors. He informs that the course curriculum of his department is as per the requirements of Mohanlal Sukhadia University. Academics are now being conducted in accordance with the new NEP 2020, says Prof. Soni.
Prof. Soni shares that he studied in the English medium from grade one to PhD level and graduated with a degree in Science. He then opted to get a postgraduate degree in Economics in order to compete in entrance tests. After finishing his postgraduate studies, his interest in this subject grew, and he feels that students who come into the economics field after studying science have an advantage in the subject. He claims that, while most students at government colleges speak Hindi, he saw it as a challenge and, despite coming from an English-medium background, he teaches Hindi-medium pupils comfortably. He also teaches English-medium kids individually and ensures their satisfaction.
Prof. Asok Soni was born and raised in Udaipur and attended Maharana Mewar Public School for his schooling. He completed his higher secondary schooling at Alok School before pursuing BSc and MSc degrees. He is the first member in his family to acquire a PhD and work in government services.
Prof. Ashok considers Swami Vivekananda as his role model, as he ignited the light of knowledge at a young age and accomplished what would be remembered for centuries.
The quote of Swami Vivekananda "उठो, जागो और तब तक मत रुको जब तक लक्ष्य प्राप्त न हो जाए।" inspires him a lot.
Talking about his hardships, Prof. Soni states that he had none during his teaching career. He obtained his PhD in 2008 after joining government service. Currently, he works as a research guide, and two students got their PhDs under his supervision, out of whom one of them is an Assistant Professor at Sukhadia University. He is currently supervising four students in conducting research. His four textbooks were recently published, and his research works have also appeared in national and international publications.
Prof. Soni shares that he has been involved with student movements and groups since he was a student. And, since entering the teaching profession, he has been involved with several teachers’ groups and movements, which gives him delight. He also attempts to incorporate the views and demands that he had as a student. At the same time, he makes every effort to help the college and its students.
On behalf of the institution, he encourages students to attend classes on a regular basis, learn from their professors' experiences, and finish their curriculum to reap future rewards.
According to Prof. Ashok, there are several opportunities for those who wish to pursue a graduate degree in Economics. It aids in the pursuit of a teaching career as well as in a variety of competitive tests in government, banking, finance, and other fields. Economics is especially useful for postgraduate students since it prepares them to compete in exams such as the Indian Economic Service, the Indian Statistical Service, and the UPSC's Staff Selection Commission. Economics may also help you learn and study other courses, such as Geography and Sociology. There are also several opportunities in the business sector for economics students.
