Prof. Alekhya Punjala, a celebrated dancer and former registrar of Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University, made history as the first woman to hold this position in the university's 32-year history. As an acclaimed exponent of Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam, Prof. Alekhya has been captivating audiences since 1977.
Her journey in dance began in childhood, with her family's unwavering encouragement, which led her to a professional career after her "Arangetram." Her accomplishments are numerous, including several state and national awards, most notably the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contributions to Kuchipudi, presented by the President of India.
Despite coming from a family of medical professionals, Prof. Alekhya pursued her passion for dance, earning a degree in Bharatanatyam from Osmania University along with advanced training in Kuchipudi. Additionally, she holds a postgraduate degree in Ancient Indian History, Culture, and Archaeology, and has been awarded a PhD for her extensive work.
Prof. Punjala reflects on her life's challenges, acknowledging that like any woman's journey, hers was filled with both joyous and difficult phases. The sudden loss of her father made it challenging for her to continue her passion, but her mother’s advice to balance academics and dance helped her persevere.
After marriage, Prof. Alekhya Punjala skillfully managed both her family responsibilities and her dance career. She emphasizes the difficulties dancers face in finding the right opportunities to showcase their talent, but she has never let these challenges deter her.
Prof. Alekhya draws inspiration from renowned dancers like Pandit Birju Maharaj, Yamini Krishnamurthy, and Chitra Visweswaran, who motivate her to practice diligently every day. Her dance is her greatest source of inspiration, driving her to constantly strive for excellence.
To alleviate stress, Prof. Alekhya finds solace in nature, drawing strength from its divinity, which rejuvenates her spirit. She maintains a positive outlook in all situations and advises others to spread love and positivity.
