Born to an artist mother, Priya was always inclined towards art and eventually chose dancing as a career and became a Kathak Dancer. She aims to give her dance knowledge to the students charging minimal or no fee.

Priya Sharma is a Kathak Dancer and Teacher at Ghungroo Kathak Sangeet Mahavidhyalaya based in Dehradun. She has been in the dance profession for the last thirty years.

When asked how she became interested in the dance field, Priya says that she was not interested in dancing in her childhood. Her mother was a music teacher and she was a bit inclined toward music since her childhood. However, when she grew up her mother wanted her to pursue dance and took her under the guidance of Pramila Pandey. She started dancing at the age of twenty. She says that it was not easy for her to learn dance in her twenties but she worked hard with her guru, learned dancing for one year, and gave her exam. And from the second year, she started teaching dance and has been teaching since then.

Recalling her childhood memories, Priya says that she had a good childhood in Kotdwar with her siblings. She says that her mother was a teacher, and she could not spend much time with her, however, she had a very big family and has spent a lot of memorable moments during her childhood. She pursued music till her third year, but then shifted to Dehradun. Priya says that she owes all her success to her teacher Pramila Pandey who was a very strict teacher, and she has achieved everything due to her teacher’s strictness.

Speaking about her dance journey, Priya says that she has a twenty-year specially-abled child. She says that her husband was in the merchant navy, and she handled her kid alone till sixteen years. Taking care of a special child along with your career is not an easy task, says Priya. She further adds that even with so many struggles and ups and downs in life, she never stopped dancing. Also, despite having financial difficulties, she never let that financial issue affect her zeal for dancing and teaching.

Regarding her mistakes, Priya says that her life has been very simple. She has spent her life all around dance and her family and says that she has not done any such mistake that she regrets. However, she has gone through some bank frauds, she says.

Talking about her achievements, Priya says that her students have attended the workshop of Pandit Birju Maharaj which she thinks is an achievement for her. Also, a student of Pandit Birju Maharaj visits her academy every year to coach her students, which is a great achievement.

Speaking about her role models, Priya says that her mother has been her role model. She says that her mother also had a very tough time and made many sacrifices. Her mother has always encouraged her to practice and teach dance, says Priya.

Talking about stress, Priya says that her son and her students have been so good that she does not have any reason for stress in her life.

Sharing her life mantra, Priya says that she believes in helping people with no greed. She says that if you help people without expecting anything in return, God will definitely see your efforts and reward you for your goodness.
