After spending 27 years in the banking industry, Prema did her doctorate in music at the age of 60. She was recognized by the Tamil Nadu government in 2017 and has performed in India and across the country. Prema advises aspiring musicians to keep learning and updating themselves, and to practise before a performance.

Prema Rangarajan retired as an Assistant Manager from a nationalised bank, and then turned to music. Her goal is to learn and teach Carnatic music. She has performed both within and outside India.

Prema reveals that in 2017, the Tamil Nadu government acknowledged her accomplishments in music. She enjoys studying the Kritis, a type of Carnatic music composition. Prema used to put on themed concerts, for which she received several accolades as well as an A Grade from All India Radio.

Prema, who was raised in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, attended Delhi University for her postgraduate studies in Sanskrit. She then wanted to work as a lecturer, but her father pushed her to pursue music studies instead. Her grandmothers, who enjoyed Carnatic music, were another source of inspiration for Prema. At sixty, Prema went back to school for her PhD in music after working for over thirty years in the financial sector. She travels all across India performing and teaching music to youngsters.

She talks about her early years and how she participated in extracurricular activities like sports while attending school. Her time in school and college went quite well, with no issues at all.

When talking about her difficulties, Prema says that breaking into the music field at forty was both an accomplishment and a difficulty for her. Her initial performance was met with some challenges until she became consistent in her practice and was acknowledged for the artist within her.

When asked about her role models, Prema responds that her gurus, who taught her to practise meticulously and devotedly, are her main sources of motivation. They also told her not to pursue any titles which would come naturally.

"Learn more, teach more" has been her motto throughout life. She thinks that people should always be learning and keeping up with changes in their fields. Aspiring musicians should never stop learning and improving themselves, according to her advice. In the realm of music, practise before every performance, she advises.

Speaking about her errors, she asserts that there is no room for error in the banking industry and that she complied with all laws and guidelines in addition to promptly consulting with her superiors, if any problem arose. She claims that she has never made a mistake in the music field because she always carries out her guru's advice to work with complete commitment and honesty.
